I think it could depend on how you said it, if you came off as snooty and stuck up, I could understand why they were upset. However, if you weren't this way, that was a big overreaction. You were just pointing out fact and being financially realistic, which is good, when it comes to these kinds of luxuries some people lack common sense. The shitty thing is though, sometimes even when we tell the truth, we're still punished for it
