Today, my boyfriend took me to dinner. As we waited for our food he took my hand and said, "I think we should break up." When I got outside, my tire was flat. FML

no. dumping someone in public means they can't get too upset, it's basically trying to control their reaction and feelings. which is bullshit (unless they are violent or some other legit reason but generally it's a BS tactic).

It is. But our gender is really stupid (i apologise) but to us this makes sence. Eventhough I know this is a big no no and certainly would never do it, I dont understand why. I think it would be nice to bring her to the restaurant and afterwards talk to her in private in order to let the relationship end in a nice setting. But like I said: fear not we know this is a no go. We just dont get why... (Or at least I don't)

Who wants to be seen crying and/or breaking down in public? Whether he made a big scene or not, a lot of people can't stop themselves from crying during a breakup and that itself is very embarrassing.

40 - proposing in public without first making sure your partner is ready to say yes is manipulative, yes. If they aren't ready they may feel pressured into saying yes, because turning down a public proposal would make them look like the villain.

I'm iffy about anyone proposing without talking about it first, tbh. It makes it very hard for the other person to say no without making the proposer feel like shit. But I don't think it's always manipulative to do, just maybe thoughtless, like they might be so in love they just want to share it with everyone. I don't know.

I mean of all the ways to be broken up with I feel getting fed is a good way to go. Also as a side note perhaps he broke up with her in public in order to control her reaction because he didn't want her to talk him back in to a situation that he doesn't want to be in. a lot of private break ups result in the other party causing a scene, crying, yelling, and then begging to be taken back. some weaker willed or guilty feeling people accept and go back even though they don't want to. so breaking up in private sort of releases them from the angry side of a break up.
