Today, my girlfriend's dad called to say she wasn't allowed to come with me on a three-day trip on New Year's. He waited until Christmas to say it, even though we booked and paid for the trip nearly a month ago. Now he ruined both holidays. FML

If you're old enough to take a holiday alone together in the first place, then I assume you two are old enough consenting adults, so just ignore the dad and go ahead with the trip. Your relationship is your business only - other people can join you in on the fun if you let them, but they have no right to dismantle or obstruct it.

Well if you are over 18 he can't really tell her what to do.

Why not just sell them. Tickets are expensive. You can get your money back.

I do agree that he's an asshole, but if his gf is going to listen to her father she clearly deserves to be single!

What a pig. Unless your girlfriend's a child/young adult, why are you taking his crap?

I'm pretty sure she is an adolescent otherwise she would probably say screw that and go anyway.

^but isn't that what adolescents of this generation do anyway

I thought it was a perfect comment idk why you were voted down???

Because that type of comment doesn't contribute to the discussion, it is a waste of a comment.

But she's an attractive female. Stated by rule #438 of the internets, females automatically get upvoted.

What a grinch, he should have at least had the decency to give a rejection in advance.

Well if you are over 18 he can't really tell her what to do.

But if she's over 18, the dad can kick her out or something really drastic for taking the trip and going against his 'rules'.

If you're old enough to go on a trip unsupervised you're old enough to tell her dad no. Or plead to her mother if all else fails.

if you have the financial means to pay for it yourself, you don't need parental permission for a trip.

It could have been a trip with OP's family though. I know when I was 16 and 17 I had a long-term boyfriend and we went on trips with each other's families all the time. We were never left alone but I could see how OP's girlfriend's dad could have felt uneasy about her being in a similar situation. Although changing his mind a week beforehand isn't right.
