She should have thought of that sooner. Or found somewhere to stop to change it. Or, at the very least, done it when a trucker (or family in a large truck/van/SUV) couldn't look down into her car! Sure, tampons have a time limit, but there is nothing anywhere that says they MUST be used for all of that time! Good God, is there nothing people won't find a bullshit excuse for anymore??

TSS doesn't have an exact time limit. It's not like you're safe for 8 hours and at 8:01 you're infected. Leaving a tampon in for too long creates the kind of environment that TSS grows in, but it's very rare and would normally take days of not changing one for you to even have a chance of getting it. If you already have the bacteria in your body then you can become infected after just 4 hours. 8 hours is the general limit, but you certainly won't be doomed if you have to leave it in for an extra 30 minutes or hour. I'm not saying it's a good idea to go around with the same tampon for 9 hours (that could give you an infection and there is still a slight risk of TSS), but if you really can't change it for that extra hour or so, you don't have to start writing your will. I highly doubt she was changing it because of TSS; she probably just didn't want to mess through her clothes and car.

Just that one day?

If it was her then the tampon would have stayed in the car and been saved as a little snack for when she finishes putting in a new one.
