Today, I proposed to a girl I'd been in love with for 6 years. I filled the balcony of the building where I'd first laid eyes on her with innumerable roses and, under the starlit sky, I did it. She later posted on facebook 'OMG. This geek I knew from high school did the FUNNIEST thing today'. FML

Wait wait. Were you two not dating when you proposed? Dude, you can't propose to someone you're not dating, promised to, or courting. There has to be a mutual understanding that there's a romantic future between you. You can't just propose to someone you like or love but isn't reciprocal.

Yeah,the way you phrased this makes it seem that you two were not even dating at all. Be that the case, it's a HUGE "YDI". This just in: real life is not a horrible rom-com, and proposing to a girl you're "in love with" but not dating will, most likely, blow up in your face.
