Here in the UK some of our parks have single rider queues, so if you queue there you will get sat next to a stranger in order to fill the empty seats. Sounds like that would have been useful in this situation! Sitting next to strangers on a ride is something that I understand a lot of people are put off by, but in reality you're only next to them for around 2 minutes. So FYL OP, that is some really bad luck!

Don't take it to heart. First, a majority of people who go to theme parks, go in groups or at least pairs. Also, for those few who do go by themselves, a majority will choose to sit alone vs by a complete stranger. It has nothing to do with you, just the fact most people are put off by sitting so close to some random person. If it makes you feel any better, i'd have plopped down next to you.
