Chiel's illustrated FML

Good morning everyone! Have you heard the news? June's not over yet. Well, not on FML anyway. When we decided to go full Dutch during this special month, we went full out and welcomed a total of 4 artists from The Netherlands. Chiel, our artist of the day, is also from this great country, and you'll see how fascinating and intriguing his art is. Chiel is certainly one hell of a kind.

-What are your name, surname and nickname?
My name is Chiel te Bokkel, I sign my work with my own name. I have never found or have been given a suitable nickname, therefore my own name is the one that suits me the most.

-How old are you?
I'm 27.

-Where do you live?
-I live in The Netherlands, Zwolle.

-What's your job?
I am an illustrator and graphic designer. I have several clients for my graphic designs. The biggest client helps young (illegal) immigrants return to their own country, and help them build a new life. As an illustrator I draw and write comics, illustrate poetry and like live-drawing. With my illustration collective de AvierKoerier we go around the country portraying everybody's head.

-What's your journey?
-I missed drawing and telling stories when I studied Graphic Design. I made advertising for Mc Donald's and other minor interesting projects. That's why I went to the Art academy in Zwolle (ArtEZ). There I learned new ways of telling stories and really found my own way of making comics after a couple of years. I try to find a balance between word/story and the image. I think in a lot of comics the word/story becomes more important than the image.

-What are your inspirations?
Inspiration can come from a lot of stuff, but the most inspiration I get is from short stories. They are often well written, a bit weirder than novels and a lot of fun to read.

-Do you read webcomics ? If so, which ones ?
-I used to read a lot of webcomics, but the most were not interesting enough to follow. But there are still a few favourites. First up: Perry Bible Fellowshop (too bad it stopped publishing), TRIP, made by Jasper Rietman is one I always enjoy. A few comics I enjoy following on facebook: Jeroom, Cyanide & Happiness and Jeroom. A few favorite comicbooks: Bardín, the Surrealist, by Max. David Heatly, My brain is hanging upside down. De Liefhebbers, by Brecht Evens and Cimes, by Vincent Fortemps.

-Tell us more about your website?
My website shows my portfolio. When I make a website I always try out new stuff. This is my 5th design for a website and am finally happy with the result. It shows everything I am doing, but still looks clear.

-How do you work?
-I don't have a routine I go through when I start. Most of the times I don't even know what I am drawing until I am halfway done with the drawing. This gives me freedom, but it also happens that after I am almost done I have start all over. I use a lot of materials. For the FML comic I just used a pencil and Photoshop.

-Why did you choose this FML story ?
It is a funny story. All the people in the gym looking at you. I saw it as a challenge to draw a crowded gym, with a lot of different people, like fat people trying to lose weight, strong people trying to get stronger and... you. The full gym I have drawn you can find on my own website.

If you want to be the next published artist, send an email to alice [at] including a link to your website/blog/DeviantArt. But DON'T send your illustration right away! You need first to get in touch with me, and I'll tell you what you have to do!
