Gooooooooood morning folks! Let's celebrate the fact that some of us are on vacation for the summer by NOT changing our weekly routine. That's right, all summer long we'll provide you with brand new illustrations made specifically for you. By the way, do you know how this illustrated section works? First, the artist has to find a story (the how and why he chooses one in particular is revealed at the end of each article), then, he or she creates a sketch, so we can be sure it works, and that it's daaamn funny enough to be provided to you, and then BAM, on Saturday, the first thing I do in the morning is to publish it. Let's not forget Alan, our god, our supervisor who makes sure the article isn't ful off mystak if u no wat i mean. And then, we get to this kind of cool interview:
-What is your name, surname and nickname?
-My name is Calum Sutherland, but I’ve been known as “Sudz” for as long as I can remember. One of those goofy family nicknames, like how all Hamiltons are, “Hammy,” and all Smiths are, “Smithy.” It could’ve been a LOT worse.
-How old are you?
-21 years old, and recently graduated, so I guess this is when real life starts.
-Where do you live? -I’m currently residing in a small town in the north-east of Scotland with my family, and hoping to escape as soon as possible!
-What's your job?
-At the moment, I work with a whiskey distributor, and before that I worked in a shortbread factory. I’ve contributed more to Scottish culture than William Wallace and the Proclaimers combined, but now I’m looking to start a small business, as a freelance artist. Failing that, I’ll start a haggis farm or feed the Loch Ness monster they have at the aquarium.
-What's your journey? -I’ve never really had any set path, I just bumble from one event to the other, hoping that people don’t hate what I’m doing too much. Maybe now that I’ve thought about running a business I’ll gain some perspective!
-What are your inspirations?
-I’m heavily inspired by things like the classic superhero comics, '80s era animation such as Johnny Quest and TMNT, and the more cartoony styling of Spongebob and the Looney Tunes. Trying to combine what I feel are the best qualities of each to create dynamic fun artwork has been a hell of a challenge.
-Which webcomics do you read?
-Oh lord, I could give you a list as long as my arm, but I’ll whittle it done to my favourites. Boxer Hockey, Manly Guys Doing Manly Things, Awkward Zombie, and Johnny Wander hold a special place in my heart as classics, but more recently Helvetica, I am ARG! And Whomp! have been distracting me from my work lately!
-Tell us more about your website.
-At this moment in time I’m actually building a website to promote myself, and therefore have nothing to say! Er… Next question!
-Ok ok! How do you work?
-SLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOWLY. But I’d like to think the time I put in shows.
-Why did you choose this FML story?
-As soon as I read it I had an idea in my head that I thought was pretty funny, so I went with it! It was great fun to do and I loved every second of it!
If you want to be the next published artist, send an email to alice [at] fmylife.com including a link to your website/blog/DeviantArt. But DON'T send your illustration right away! You need first to get in touch with me, and I'll tell you what you have to do!
Hey there, young whippersnappers. Yes, you, the youth. I’m talking to you, sitting at home, scratching your asses. Why aren’t you doing something more constructive with your lives? Stop watching that shit…
