Today, in a crowded hallway, I saw the guy I fancy standing in front of me, with his arms open wide. Thinking he wanted to hug me, I wrapped my arms around him and stepped back. He looked at me like I was nuts. I then realised he was trying to hug the girl next to me. FML

But OP wasn't hugging a random stranger whom she'd never seen before, but a guy that she has a crush on. And even if she was hugging a rando, so what as long as both understood that it was being as done so for their mutual benefit eg, out of (possibly future) friendship, spreading joy & peace worldwide one person at a time, and/or not for nefarious means such as pick-pocketing.

Just because op has a thing for this guy does not mean that they ever had a conversation. Many sit back in silence waiting for the other to declare their feelings and have that hallmark moment. I’m getting that they weren’t friends, otherwise the mistake would have been understandable. Or if they do talk, they aren’t exactly that close.

It was you who said stranger, not me. I said random _people_.
Being done for mutual benefit would need mutual agreement, which obviously isn't the case, otherwise it wouldn't be on FML.

I draw the conclusion that you are nuts too.
