If your car was starting fine before you dropped it off at the mechanic, then in all likelihood you don't need a new battery. He's just trying to fleece you. That's one major reason why you should never just leave your car at the mechanic. Unless you absolutely trust him. At the very least, make sure that you ask to see the old battery.

OP - You may or may not need a new battery. But $200 for battery is excessive. If you go to your local auto parts store they will sell you a new battery for less than that and install it for free.

Looks like someone is a sucker they must have seen you a mile away or you told them "My car keeps making a fluttering coughing sound when I hit the gas" that just puts sucker right on your forehead ..instead look in the owners manuel it has a trouble shooting guide

The last time I was told I needed a new battery I told them I’ll wait until I have to jump start it once to replace it. It worked for another year and two months after that day. So if your car is starting, wait until it doesn’t.
