Today, I went to my stepdad's funeral. He was the most important person in my life, but it didn't stop my stepsister angrily saying, "Why are you crying? He wasn't even your real dad." FML

I get that she's upset and all, but what a bitchy thing to say!
There's more to being a dad than being a sperm donor. So probably a real dad in any sense of it.
Sorry for your loss as OP.

Things like this can bring out the worst in people because they are upset. At my uncle's funeral my cousin got mad at me for crying and said "Its not like YOUR dad died!" and I wasn't upset about it because I understood that she was just upset and stuff like that spills out. All you can do is support her in a time like this while also having people who support you, since it was a major loss for you as well. I'm very sorry OP.

I came here to comment something similar to 17. Hurt and loss can make people act irrationally. It was rude of her to say, but she just lost her dad, so she was probably just focused on her own pain. It's understandable.

honestly, she was probably just upset and lashed out. probably nothing against OP, just can't deal with her feelings.

My stepdad raised my sister and me, so I completely understand. Our biological father has such a minor role in our lives that he's obsolete. My stepdad is my Dad. I'm sorry for your loss.

really? think it out, its my stepdad raised (my sister and) me. Would you say "my stepdad raised I?" In this circumstance, "me" would be the appropriate term.

Nice to see a happy ending when it comes to step dad's instead of all these horror stories you usually hear. Happy for you :)

Your dad is the one that raises you, cares for you, and makes sure you grow up to be a great person. The other guy is a sperm donor. Coming from a guy who loves his stepfather and would do anything for him I'm so sorry for your loss OP.

She is probably just taking her anger out on you because of how upset she is, hope it all turns out better. Sorry for your loss OP

Damn, that sucks. But your stepsister is kinda right. She should be the one who is most devastated. Lol, I'd probably be the stepsister to say that.

ah yes punch someone who is grieving for their father. classy.
(also obviously what she said was cruel but that is no excuse for violence, especially at a funeral).

So sorry about your loss. Stepparent or not, they can still play one of the biggest roles in a child's life, and what your stepsister had to say, even if she was upset about her biological father's loss, it was completely uncalled for.

Grief isn't a contest though. Everyone is allowed to be upset.

I said what their stepsister had to say was uncalled for. Not them being upset. OBVIOUSLY everyone has the right to be grieving, but just because someone that's not related to them by blood's upset, it doesn't mean anger should be taken out on them.
