Today, I was working as a waitress at this pub. It was dead. After 4 hours I had only made 5$ in tips. A friendly couple came in and complimented EVERYTHING down to the freshness of the lemons in their tea. The bill came to $50. They left me a $5 gift card to starbucks. I don't drink coffee. FML

Today, I went into work to waitress on a table of 40 guests. They were my only table for the day and the bill came to over 700 dollars. After they left the busser was cleaning the table and threw out the credit card receipt which had my tip on it. FML

Today, at work, I served a group of three teens. Their tab was $75 and they tipped me nothing. They wrote a thank you on a piece of receipt paper, put it in a glass of water and used a coaster to turn the glass of water upside down on the table, spilling water everywhere. They also stole my pen. FML

Today, while I was working at Starbucks, a customer spilled her drink all over the counter. After I cleaned up her spill and remade the drink (for free), she exclaimed, "Thanks! I should really tip you!" Then she turned around, walked directly past the tip jar, and left the store. FML

Today, I was waitressing for a huge family. Their bill was $750. Excited about the tip, I was shocked to see only $0.50. As they were leaving, I threw the two whole quarters at their heads. Guess who also got fired today. FML

Today, I was the only carhop at work for the last 2 hours. In that time, I waited on about 50 cars. I make server pay so I depend on tips, but none of them tipped me even a penny. I averaged under $3 an hour tonight. FML

Today, while I was working as a waitress, I had to wait on a table of 13 people. I was struggling through it and when they finally left I went by the table to pick up my tip. Instead of a money I got a napkin saying "Here's your tip, don't be a waitress." FML

Today, a customer tried to pay for a $1.55 cup of coffee with a gift card, but he came up a dollar short. He let another customer through while he fumbled in his pocket for money. I later noticed a dollar had disappeared from my tip jar. FML

and everyone saying its not mandatory, yeah its not mandatory its just POLITE. it's not mandatory to say "please" and "thank you" either, people just do it to be friendly and courteous. what a concept.

Kudos to #93. Yeah, I don't see oncologists getting tipped for finding that cancer before it was too late. A lot of places don't even allow tips or anything.

#82: Do you live in America? You would realize that tipping is to compensate for the fact that waitors/waitressess don't get minimun wage. They have to pay the cooks & bus boys and barely come out on top themselves. And those of you who are saying, you chose the profession. Uh, not necessarily. This is a recession, and a job IS a ******* job. If the older couple couldn't afford to tip but could pay $50 at a pub, then they could drag their asses to McDonalds.

Wow. I can not believe everyone here saying the OP is being ungrateful. Tipping is the norm in America, and you should always tip at least 15% unless the service is just terrible. I am a teenager and we have a rep of being terrible tippers, and I rarely tip less that 20%.
