Today, I had an emergency appendectomy, so I texted my boss to let him know about the situation. He replied that it'd be good for my continued employment prospects if I come into work tomorrow. FML

It would be bad for his continued employment prospects if you reported him and used that text as evidence at a tribunal

It would be good for your life if you didn't

Is that even legal in NZ? In the US sometimes you can get fired for that unfortunately.

No its not, yea he will have take in a medical certificate and possibly hospital discharge papers but most bosses allow a 3 day grace period for you to get this in. The amount of time off is specified by your doctor if you get paid depends on your contract

If it's an at will state, they can fire him for no reason at all. But if op can prove the real reason then the boss will be in some shit.

OP isn't in the USA so I don't think "at will" is a concern in this case.

Good he can fire you and you can sue for wrongful dismissal. Make him pay big time for being a douche.

What a douche! You just look after yourself first Op!

Typical New Zealand boss, treating workers like shit! If he does fire you hammer him for unfair dismissal!

Same thing happened to me 2 months ago. I called in as soon as I experienced abdominal pain to let them know the severity was enough to hospitalize me, I texted to confirm that It was in fact appendicitis and they were admitting me for surgery, and brought in a doctors note from the hospital. Why wouldn't you call or give them as much notice as possible? Btw, i'm still employed and I had a week off for rest,

EMERGENCY...he might not have had that much notice.

Especially appendicitis, it can be hard for certain doctors to figure out the cause. I know for a fact my mom had gotten hers out last minute. It actually ruptured during the operation

Sounds like my boss. Made me come in on a sprained ankle even though I had a doctors note. Never did heal properly.

Those aren't really relatable. You had a sprained ankle, OP is having surgery.

What does the wonderful USA have to do with what happens in New Zealand?

Save the text and bring it into the Human Resources. That really shouldn't be allowed.

Doctor's note from the ER saying you can't work, and you'll be just fine.
