Today, I finally got my driver's permit. To celebrate, my parents decided to go to a bar and make me wait in the car because I'm now the designated driver. FML

Pretty sure it's still illegal, since you only have a permit and not a license. They're suppose to be instructing you, not using you. Parents these days.

You're right. A driver with a learners permit may only drive with a sober adult who is over the age of 21 and has had a lisence for more than one year.

In my state it has to be a licensed driver who has held their license for 5+ years. Sorry OP, your parents are completely using you.

It's a good thing that OP knows that what his parents are doing is wrong

#1, you're making shit up. You don't know the laws of all 50 states. In Texas, carting home drunk parents is a time-honored, parent-child bonding tradition.

My dad use to let me drive without a permit!! Because he was tired of taking me to places....

Leave their ass there. Or if the bar isn't too far from your house, explain the situation to the bouncer an take them their keys.

In my state it is completely legal to drive with your permit if the person next to you is over 21. They do not have to be sober. Not saying I completely agree with this law but its the law.

In my Provence, any licensed driver over the age of 18+ can be in the vehicle with a learner. We do become fully legal here at the age of 18 so I can see why yours is diff.

#72 I also hope your dad was arrested for this. Being inexperienced and driving is very dangerous. Its a danger to yourself and others. Also, since your not insured its a danger to yours/your parents bank account.

You should've drove off and left them there. That would've been a lesson well learned.

It is illegal, the licensed driver in the car has to be able to take control of the car and drive legally for a permitted driver to be at the wheel.

Ehh who cares? My family has done the same thing to me. And actually I've never been in any accidents and have not been pulled over by the police. I'm actually a pretty safe driver. And also just because they go to the bars does not mean they will come out drunk.

#100- I grew up on a farm. I started driving at 10. Should my folks have been arrested?

That's how it went for me, as soon as I turned 16, my parents never went shopping again.

#2, especially when they send you to the adult novelty store. "Dad, they've got different sizes here. Which size cock ring do you want?"

#54, really? That was just a lucky guess. Aw, it's ok, I don't judge. Who am I kidding? Of course, I judge, but in your case, I'm lenient ;)

So making your child illegally drive you around while you're shitfaced is safe?

Better than them driving themselves shitfaced. I've had too many people I know wreck because of that. I really don't have much pity for someone that stupid, but still, it's a lot better for them to do that rather than get behind the wheel. I'm definitely not saying I agree with that choice though.

No it's really not better. At all. OP just got their permit. They most likely have no driving experience. On top of that OP has their drunk parents in the car. How is OP supposed to know what to do or how to focus? And this also goes to show how irresponsible the parents are. Why would you put your completely inexperienced child in charge of driving your drunk ass with no help or guidance?

You no you can still give guidance while your to drunk to drive. Being drunk doesn't make u forget how to drive its just kills ur reaction time and ability to go straight

You literally just said being drunk impairs your reaction time and motor skills. How the hell is that a good guide, especially for someone who has never driven before? If you in any way think that making OP drive his drunk parents was a good idea or "safer than being drunk" you're a fucking idiot. No matter what this situation is extremely dangerous.

#97 Being drunk also makes your judgement a lot worse so they would probably just give the driver dumb answers.

I don't know the full situation, but I can assume based on what's written that your parents are using you, OP. Shame on them, and FYL. Next time they try something like this just refuse to cooperate, either by not driving them there or just leaving them at the bar to walk home on their own.

Hey his parents have probably been carting his ass around for years! Now you want him to leave them stranded with no DD? Yet another reason not to have kids.....

to drive with a permit, you need a sober adult. they are to instruct you... having him drive without a sober adult isn't safe, and with a learning driver, is often scarier because the parents could be very loud and scare the teen while they are driving. It isn't fun...

Yes, but riding with a 16 year old is terrifying. ..... could obviously use a drink or 3 to forget that you're in mortal danger.

Instead, OP should have them call a taxi so that they don't drive home drunk themselves, which is way more dangerous than OP driving.

why would they drive to another bar? it's not like they could drink there either. They are still the driver therefore cannot drink at any bar. Plus if they have to sit outside and wait I am guessing they're under age.

Having a driving permit doesn't necessarily mean that you're underage. It's not that uncommon for people to not get a permit or license because they don't have a car to drive or just don't have the money for it. I know people who didn't have DL's at the age of 25. But did have permits.

#18 Just because you are their child DOES NOT mean you have to bow to their every wish and command, especially something as horrid as using their child to drive them so they can get drunk and make them wait. If I was the OP, I would have left them there and if they called, I wouldn't answer.

Wow, how kind of them.
Well, OP, getting your permit is both a blessing and curse. You have the freedom to drive, but you must also play duty of designated driver.
