Today, a guy from my school came into my work. I knew him but forgot his name. I didn't want to be rude and ask for his name when he probably expected me to know it. So, thinking I was clever, I said "How do you spell your name again?". His name was Rob. FML

I always play the "how old are you?". "I dont believe you", "prove it, show me your license". Flattery makes people blind :)

Meh - I know a Robb or two. You could have made a semi graceful recovery - "Thought so, but my (fake) cousin has an extra 'b' in his".

And then Rob went to the manager and complimented him on hiring people with mental disabilities

That would've worked and infact been very smart if you carried on with something like "Oh, sorry! Haha. I must look stupid right now. But I know another Rob that spells his name with two 'b's, and I didn't want to look even MORE stupid by accidentally putting two :). "

This reminds me of an older Ellen Degeneres stand up: "I'm sorry, remind me again how you pronounce your name? ...Kathy?....Oh so the emphasis is on the first syllable, KAthy...hmm, for some reason I thought it was KaTHEE"

OP, I've done the same thing as u... except I'm lucky that the people don't have names that easy to spell.

I would have been like, "I was talking about your last name." Of course, with your luck his last name would have been Smith.
