Today, I had to put my wonderful dog in a shelter because when I went to renew my lease my landlord casually mentioned he'd be hiking up my rent by a few hundred dollars. The only place I can find to live on short notice doesn't allow animals, and no one I know could take care of him for me. FML
I agree, your life sucks 290

As a dog lover, I can't use words to describe how bad I feel for you. Hopefully your life gets better soon, OP!

Go online and see if you can have him registered as a service animal. He can be for "emotional support." Then legally the other residences cannot deny you because of your dog

They can't change the tempt price for someone that is a current tenant though. Or is it different in America?

Once lease is up I think you have to renegotiate the entire contract. Even if there are laws about it, the land lord would have just renewed the lease and then made OP's life hell in different ways until they moved- except then they would also have to buy out whatever was left on that lease. Land lords get pissy when they aren't getting enough money for whatever hole in the wall they're leasing or renting while pretending it's a mansion. Especially if you try to point out that some of their business practices are/could be illegal.

Land of Capitalism the big man does what thwy ******* want to.

I didn't think a landlord could raise the rent that much on a renewal. I would have questioned it with the HUD authority in your area. I'm so sorry for you.

I would probably stop functioning if I had to both move and give up my dog to somewhere they would be at risk. It could be a bit late for this, but maybe look around online and see if there are any animal rescue services that can set your dog up with a foster family? Or would be willing to kennel him for X number days if you provided him food and paid for the space? Or a kennel might be willing to cut a deal for a long term stay, especially if you agreed to give them good advertisement as long as the care was up to standards. Though, it's possible you placed him in a no-kill shelter, in which case the above was all superfluous advice for you at least, OP. I'm really sorry you had to make that choice- we've come close to having to give our three up too many times because of money issues. That was bad enough- having to actually do it... I'd prefer a different poison, I think. Good luck and I hope that you can get somewhere that you can get your fur kid back safe and sound..

I would just hide the dog from the landlord. I used to do it cause the price for an animal in a rented place is so expensive. I live in Florida too. $600 payment to have your pet living with you is insane. You have to be sneaky about it though. I would took the dog. I love animals!

Please don't abuse this if you don't at least have some level of depression or anxiety though... abusing the emotional support animal thing just makes it harder for people who actually need to have a registered emotional support animal to be taken seriously...
