Man or woman?

Today, I applied for my first job. I didn't know how to write a resume, so I copied and pasted one from someone else and reworked it. I got on the bus, handed it in, and left. Then I remembered I forgot to change the contact info and date. FML

just go back to the company and explain what happened. im sure this kind of thing happens enough so that they are used to it. its not like u did anything wrong by sing someone elses format

Too many negative votes, comment buried. Show the comment.

I'm replying to the first comment so I can be at the top.

#63 - On 07/14/2009 at 4:23pm by Hammertym3

Not really.
If she's anywhere near the same age as me, it's not uncommon to not know how to write a resume. I personally went to a Hire-a-Student place to get help writing mine. I strongly suggest the OP does the same next time.

Holy sh*t I sound so uptight...

#65 - On 07/14/2009 at 4:36pm by Noire_

haha troll? nice tho lol
i hate how people are like "UCANT REPLY FIRST POST ONLY TO GET UR COMMENT SEENS" cuz who doesnt want their comments to be seen

#68 - On 07/14/2009 at 4:38pm by BleedingAssassin

no actually that is not a common thing, just a stupid thing. Most people can figure out how to write their own resumées.

#84 - On 07/14/2009 at 6:22pm by electrikpunk

You totally fucking deserved it.

#87 - On 07/14/2009 at 7:26pm by justdancebbyx3

Naw, not if she's my age. I'm 13, and I had no idea how to write one. Other people helped me. I know another 14 year old who got his dad to help him write his.

#92 - On 07/14/2009 at 9:09pm by Noire_

Theoretically, everyone knows how to write a resume, just throw you experiences on a piece of paper and call it a day.

However, not everyone can write a good resume that gets them noticed, and that's why there are zillions of resume self help books on the market. I personally checked out three of these from the library when I decided to reformat my resume a few years ago because I wasn't getting success.

#98 - On 07/14/2009 at 10:39pm by Rosalind

"resumées", huh? :P

but YDI

#2 - On 07/14/2009 at 1:58pm by MelanieBerrigan

why cant she just go in with a new resume?

#28 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:42pm by amy_shmamy

bingo, just plagiarize again and use a slightly different font

#36 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:56pm by spoo

I don't think she plagiarized it - that was what I thought at first, but I think she just changed the information in each field (except for contact) to her own.

#86 - On 07/14/2009 at 6:32pm by your_face

Wouldn't that be like, the first thing you would think to change? YDI

#3 - On 07/14/2009 at 1:58pm by eleanor_rigby

#3, you're assuming she THOUGHT in the first place.

OP, there's nothing shameful about not knowing how to write a resume; we all had to learn at some point. But there IS something shameful about plagiarizing. You should ask someone to help you, or even look it up online. There are plenty of websites that teach you how to write things like that. I don't know about Germany, but here in America we have government agencies that help people find jobs (in New York State it's called One Work Source) and one of their services is to help you write resumes, and it's free. See if there's anything like that there?

#83 - On 07/14/2009 at 6:13pm by intotheblue

YDI- and dont deserve to get the job over people who werent lazy and wrote their own

#4 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:00pm by tenniskettle

He stated he didn't KNOW how to write one so he just filled in his information. You aren't taught how to write a resume until college and it was his first job so he's probably only of high school age. So why wouldn't he just copy and paste? Should he rewrite all of the headings or sections himself to make it look identical? That's just called common sense to do it the easiest way. FYL.

#24 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:32pm by hotlobbies2

You mean she. But just the same, YDI.

#38 - On 07/14/2009 at 3:04pm by AAAAHHHH12

#24 I jus graduated high school and I know how to write a resume I wasa taught in 10th grade I know how to do a business one and one for an acting job
O.P You totally deserve it dum ass next time proof read and changing the name should have been the 1st thing u did U FAIL MISERABLY

#48 - On 07/14/2009 at 3:43pm by realrealitysuccs

I was taught how to write a resume in seventh grade. Then again in eighth, and finally in nineth grade. Whatever schools you guys have goen to fail at life if you haven't learned by college because most people get jobs before college. Also, this is when a simple google search on how to write a resume comes into play.

#54 - On 07/14/2009 at 4:02pm by heystephanie

Hey, shocking news break, not all public schools teach the same things at the same time or at all, amazing I know!!

#72 - On 07/14/2009 at 4:55pm by emzmcgee

i completely agree with #24
except i don't think this is an fml because you should be able to send another

#82 - On 07/14/2009 at 6:07pm by blargity

Actually, some high schools are starting to teach resume-writing skills in typing classes, and etc. The high school isn't necessarily rich or fancy. It's a still newer thing though, and a lot of students still don't learn until college.

#6 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:02pm by funkymunkey00

Should've gone to college. They teach you to write a resume.

#7 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:02pm by deja54

If its their first job I doubt they're of college age

#10 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:08pm by LuckyCharms

#7:

Actually, college doesn't necessarily teach you how to make a resume. I had a class called "Internship" which was *supposed* to teach you how, but the teacher never did. Most people failed that class and complained, but she has tenure so even though she couldn't teach for beans...well. I managed to pass only because one of my neighbors works in HR and looks at resumes all day so she helped me write one. I was one of four to actually have a resume done, and therefore actually get an internship. The other people already had a job before the class.

#27 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:40pm by TheBigDawg

...sorry your college sucks...

#61 - On 07/14/2009 at 4:19pm by missbucket

Yeah, my college did suck. But anyway what I said is true. Not all colleges offer that.

Also, awesome, 100th comment on this FML. :)

easyyyy.

#71 - On 07/14/2009 at 4:44pm by oulala

They actually teach you your freshman year of high school here how to write a résumé.
That was truly pathetic though OP.

#9 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:06pm by redbluegreen

good idea, bad execution

#11 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:11pm by epicFAIL_Sometim

You're a real dumbass, write your own damn resume next time. I think it would have been worse if they actually hired you, since those weren't your skills it wouldn't have taken too long before they fired your ass. YDI

#12 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:12pm by YoungTechnique

She said she forgot to change the contact info and date, idiot, not the important sections like skills and experience. At least now she's learnt the valuable lesson of proofreading your resume 5 times before sending it out.

#30 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:44pm by littlegolferboy

But the thing is, it wasn't her actual resume! It was someone else's so she may not have actually had the skills and experience listed as her own.

#41 - On 07/14/2009 at 3:08pm by AAAAHHHH12

Wow learn how to read, it's been explained multiple times that the only thing she DIDN'T change was the contact info...everything else was hers, how hard is that to understand?

#73 - On 07/14/2009 at 4:57pm by emzmcgee

Methinks you didn't get the job...

#13 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:14pm by shewasalmost18

did you even look at it at all? not to mention oh so wrong to do to begin with... you copy styles not resumes.

#15 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:17pm by kaelendra

Your first resume? This stuff happens. If *I* did that it would be an FML and a IDI.

That is if I've interpreted this right...what you mean is that you copied someone else's resume, then replaced his background with yours, preserving only the style, right? Not that you kept the other person's background. If THAT'S the case, YDI.

#16 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:20pm by regalarius

Ok, you were applying for your first job? Then WTF did you even need a resume' for? You could have scribbled the school you attended on a napkin with your phone # in lipstick and had the same result.

Say it with me OP, BLOW JOB! Learn it, live it, love it - it is your only hope!

#17 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:21pm by skullbuster

YDI without question.

#19 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:25pm by seb12992

OP, if all you did was hand in the resume (no interview), you can just fix it and turn in another one. If you move around and reword some of the other details on the page, they won't know you messed up the first time.

#20 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:27pm by poopsicle22

Just curious, but when the OP said they reworked it, did they mean that they replaced the skills/experience/etc that the original writer had with their own? If so...well, it's still a YDI for not checking something some important & basic as the name adn contact info, but if you didn't know how to write one yourself, using another as a template would be a good idea. Just remember to give credit where it is due.

#21 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:28pm by Salisa

hope you didn't get the job sorry

#23 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:31pm by goalie20

if it was actually ur first job ever then they prob dont need a resume from you

#25 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:39pm by SoFaded80

You don't deserve the job if your that stupid

#26 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:40pm by spillproof

*you're

I know lots of people do it, but I still enjoy pointing out blatant spelling errors to people who insist on calling others stupid

#75 - On 07/14/2009 at 5:03pm by emzmcgee

You are simply awesome, sir/ma'm.

#78 - On 07/14/2009 at 5:31pm by Sharrakor

@emzmcgee - I'll give you that one and in this case I'll agree, if you are going to call someone stupid it becomes a grammar/spelling correction rodeo up in here!

#94 - On 07/14/2009 at 9:34pm by skullbuster

It's just so hard to resist sometimes...damn knowing how to spell and being anal retentive about it!

#97 - On 07/14/2009 at 10:14pm by emzmcgee

this is why people like me cant get a job because assholes like you copy other people's achievments..fuck you..and YDI

#29 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:43pm by DannyCovino

How would that prevent you, or anyone else for that matter, from getting a job exactly?

#74 - On 07/14/2009 at 5:00pm by emzmcgee

you ARE Captain Fail. and btw you don't date a resume

#31 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:44pm by PimpDaddyT

WAKE UP YOU NUBS! She is applying for her FIRST job. The "reworked" resume was packed with bullshit and lies stolen from someone else. The only honest content may have been her education. (and I stress the word may)

OP: The solution here? Go find another resume to rip off and make sure you change the contact info this time around.

#33 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:50pm by skullbuster

scheisse gelaufen...

#34 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:54pm by KAMELOT

Over half the posters here don't seem to be understanding what the situation *probably* is (only the OP can say for sure). That is, the OP copied the resume of someone else, then replaced their info with her info. If the opposite were true (that is, she attempted to get a job with fraudulent information), then I don't see why she'd be posting it here. "Oh, gee, I tried to lie my way into a job, but I failed, have pity on me."

And for those who see it from my viewpoint, still an awful lot of YDIs. Everyone makes a "d'oh!" mistake every now and then, you know...

#35 - On 07/14/2009 at 2:54pm by Sharrakor

The problem with your assumption is that this is her FIRST job, so what would she have replaced? Education, yes? And then what? Her vast experience mooching off her parents, babysitting for little Mary Jane Rottencrotch on Tuesday nights? What exactly would be on this resume'? Please, someone, I'm not being flip, I'd really like to know what the hell you people believe this masterpiece would contain other than fraudulent bullshit?!?!?!

#39 - On 07/14/2009 at 3:08pm by skullbuster

I had a resume for my first job...I simply removed the "Work Experience" section, and focused on the "Educational Experience" and "Skills" sections. There's also a good chance that there may be a "Volunteer Experience" section to add.

Believe it or not, I was even shown how to write a resume with little or no work experience in high school for one of my classes.

#44 - On 07/14/2009 at 3:30pm by regalarius

LOL Mary Jane rottencrotch.

There's plenty of things she could've written. She just had to make it sound better than it actually was. Besides, a resume is kinda about experience. Like if she walks the dog or does some chore every day, it could show that you're responsible. Also, the OP may have volunteered in some place to get experience, you know?

By the way, I learned to write resumes in the eight grade (for this class).

#45 - On 07/14/2009 at 3:32pm by quackquackquac

YDI, just rent a book or something instead of getting it off someone elses resume.
For this, I must whip out the FAIL PIG!

#40 - On 07/14/2009 at 3:08pm by Fail_Pig

hahahahahah it's funny because this is a woman and that's what she gets for leaving her sphere

#42 - On 07/14/2009 at 3:15pm by ghostmanonfirst

for leaving her sphere? dude, what sphere? Women can apply for jobs to, they're not restricted to the house or any shit like that.

#46 - On 07/14/2009 at 3:38pm by wrw28405

dumb ass! you would have been fired anyway!

#47 - On 07/14/2009 at 3:41pm by ctlovell

I dk what everyone keeps saying that you learn how to write a resume in college. I learned how to write a resume starting in 9th grade. Our school even kept a saved copy and every year we would update it. YDI for not changing that stuff though. That's the first to go.

#49 - On 07/14/2009 at 3:44pm by corbygray528

Why would you need a resume if you haven't had a job before?

#50 - On 07/14/2009 at 3:45pm by BigSky

Interviewers tend to frown upon videos of applicants expressing their marketable job skills through interpretive dance.

#60 - On 07/14/2009 at 4:19pm by RequiemCube

Not really smart. If I were you I'd start looking for other jobs.

#51 - On 07/14/2009 at 3:51pm by _Noon_

#52 - On 07/14/2009 at 4:00pm by mishel

#49: Yeah well you must've gone to a fancy, well funded HS. New York City public high schools don't teach resume writing. I didn't learn until college.

#56 - On 07/14/2009 at 4:06pm by ScruffyTJanitor

Some Kentucky public schools do though! :-D

#59 - On 07/14/2009 at 4:15pm by regalarius

i dont understand that because most people get job before college so schools teach student how to make them in at at most by grade 10

#105 - On 07/15/2009 at 5:07am by jaaxx

I am laughing at all the people that assume the OP left in the skills/experience of the sample resume. When I wrote my first resume, the Youth Career Centre gave me a book with sample resumes. I chose one and copied THE FORMAT, but put in my own info. I had to retype it since it was all in a book, so there wasn't a chance of forgetting to change something though.

#50: You always need a resume to apply at a business. When I made my first one, I put on my babysitting experience, the chores I did for my mom in her shop and also the class I took in high school that required me to work in the library as a page of sorts.

#57 - On 07/14/2009 at 4:08pm by wolfy

Go back and say 'Oh crap, sorry, that resume I had saved on my computer with the date when I first wrote it...sorry. I've also got a new number, would you like it?'

#58 - On 07/14/2009 at 4:09pm by UseTheFrags

That may work, but I'm thinking if she actually had an interview she would have mentioned her name and the interviewer would notice it was different from the resume. If that's the case, then she totally deserved it.

#91 - On 07/14/2009 at 8:55pm by tib

im sure she could just hand in a new resume

#106 - On 07/15/2009 at 5:08am by jaaxx

Wow, writing a resumé isn't that difficult at all. Why didn't you just google it?

I know how to write a resumé and I'm still in high school >_>

#89 - On 07/14/2009 at 8:03pm by islaphippos

I'm surprised you don't know how to write a resumé, I learned how to in Grade 10. I understand taking a resumé just for the format, I do it a lot and I'm sure a lot of other people do. But, why did you copy it in the first place? I go to a site, find a resumé then start a new document and just keep referring to the website. That way I don't have to worry about such an error. So, I'm gonna have to say.. both FYL and YDI.

Stupid

#93 - On 07/14/2009 at 9:13pm by painislife

Schools don't teach the same thing so its not your fault for not knowing how to write a resume. Unfortunately, you didn't take the initiative or time to find out how. So you decided to write a resume on the day that you applied?

Why didn't you wait a day or two to ask someone to review it or even start a day or two earlier? YDI. PROOFREAD Stupid.
