Today, I was fired without warning from my job because I was not consulting my boss about things like washing dishes and throwing away garbage. Basically, I was fired for being too good at my job. FML

"Yeah, I realized I could save a lot of time by combining both activities, so I threw the dishes into the garbage can, poured in detergent, and brought it out to the side of the road. I guess some people are just scared of efficiency."

So sad for you. By the way, have they replaced you? What's their number? I don't like cleaning dishes and I hoard garbage -- I'm perfect for your old job!

You should look up the At Will law that exists in some states. HR holds no power there.

HR Stands for "Human Resources". As in, individuals employed by the company who manage the people who work there. They ALWAYS hold power over terminations, that's part of their primary job.

unless there's no HR where op works cause it's not a company but maybe a small restaurant and their boss is the owner.

I totally believe you because you posted this on the Internet. You must be a great employee and thats' why you got fired.

Correction: You were fired because boss man have no idea what a good employee is, you were literally dealing with the trash. He'll realize how irrelevant reporting every little thing becomes when he has to approve every little thing. Good luck on the job hunt buddy, you got the right attitude and there are bosses who really do appreciate people like you ^^

"Hey boss, I'm just reporting that I'm going to report to you."

Sometimes in life you get dished out some trash

Coming from a supervisor standpoint, it is really annoying when employees disappear from their position even if it is to do something like dishes or garbage. Especially in customer service if you aren't there to deal with the customer, you can easily lose a sale or get a complaint filed. This means that you may have been good a secondary duties but bad at your actual job. Which would easily explain why you were fired.

But wouldn't there had been some sort of warning first?

Generally when employees disappear for periods of time, the first conclusion jumped to is not that they're off doing someone else's job. The supervisor may have just thought OP was avoiding work. Which may not have warranted a warning in their eyes.

Unless said employee was doing something illegal, everything warrants a warning first in my opinion.

OP here. I worked in a kitchen so half of my job was washing dishes and taking out garbage. There wasn't even anywhere for me to disappear to. I was genuinely fired for doing my job.

In that case OP, your life sucks and I don't know what your boss was thinking. As for warnings, it depends if the employee is on probation or not. But generally, (as said above) the employees who leave their station are trying to avoid work.

It's one thing if their issue was directly related to the value of your performance, but they're just nitpicking at something that shouldn't be a problem, let alone a fireable offense. For this reason, and the fact that California is an at-will employment state, it sounds to me like they were making up a reason as pretense to fire you for some other reason. Good luck moving on

It most likely did. Even if you have nothing to do, it's still best to stay in your area, unless expressly told or given permission by a superior. This is so that anyone knows where you are if they need you, or you are there if something does happen. For example: what if a crisis arose that OP would normally handle, while they were off doing something else? And not only that, but OP is doing things that are most likely other peoples' jobs. So then when it comes around for them to do it, they have nothing to do, and most likely have to spend extra time figuring out what happened. So not only would it affect OP's performance, but others' as well.

That makes some sense. Assuming the things she's doing is outside of her job description and requires her to be away from a post of some kind, I agree, she would have been undermining her own job performance. But even then, why was her dismissal without warning? Immediate dismissal for this seems more than a bit excessive.

This fml depends entirely on what their job was. If their job was washing dishes and taking out the trash then wow your boss sucked. If it was something like being an accountant or something, then why the hell were you washing dishes and taking out the trash ydi then.

OP here. I was working in a kitchen, so these things were my direct responsibility. The boss in question owns the company and micromanages every single aspect of the kitchen. The issue was that I wasn't asking permission to do everything.
