OP, if it makes you feel better, look at it from this point of view: At that time, you had no idea of the situation, so you shouldn't blame yourself for what you did. Clearly, you were trying to help him because you cared for him. And the fact that you put him ahead of you shows that you have a noble heart. Sadly, you did not get the job, but use this experience to reflect upon and learn from it. At the end, you were the better person and karma will certainly bite him back. Hang in there...
