Today, my boyfriend tried to be nice and change my oil, but he accidentally emptied all my transmission fluid into the pan. When he poured it back into my car, we realized he never put the cap back on and all my transmission fluid was poured all over the ground. FML

Yay my second FML posted! He was trying to do something nice. I wasn’t really that mad. He drove to the store and bought me more transmission fluid so we were fine. He’s a sweetheart, my oil never got changed though haha.

I like how you pick up on subtle text cues that aren’t even there. Besides, this ended with the transmission fluid not in her car and all over the floor. So it’s not like she could’ve been any worse.

That takes some extreme talent there. The engine oil has a drain plug, every vehicle I have ever been under, you have to completely un bolt the transmission pan to drain the fluid.

Every automatic trans has a drain plug, just like the oil pan

They most certainly do not. They have a filler plug but very few have a drain plug. Most you have to remove the oil pan because your supposed to change the filter and gasket at the same time.

Not sure what cars you work on but all the ones I get under, have a drain plug for the transmission pan.

The car got dehydrated and cannot longer move. A blood transfusion may help in prolonging its life but needed to be done by an experienced doctor. There. Now you’re up to date.

Basically he went to swap the old oil for new oil, a common thing every few thousand miles. Said engine oil keeps your engine lubricated and moving properly. Instead he drained the transmission fluid, which does for your transmission what the engine oil does for the engine. (The transmission is the part that transfers or "transmits" power from your engine to your tires and is connected to the lever in your car that in an automatic has the PND12, or something similar, or has the gears listed for a manual transmission.) It does not need to be changed anywhere near as often, and is not something an average joe may have spare quarts of in their garage. Being low on transmission fluid will cause the gear shifts to be rougher, can potentially overheat the transmission, and in extreme cases, set the car on fire. But that's only if you're really low, push it hard, and/or ignore all the warning signs.
