Something like this happened to me once. I was walking down the street and I reached into my pocket to get something for my husband and a homeless guy thought I was going to give him money and he was not pleased when I didn't. Dude tried to come after me, but another random guy stopped him. I just kept walking. I figured the best thing I could do there was leave. :P I'm thankful to that other guy, though, whoever he may be.
And #6, it's completely unreasonable to expect anyone to give money to every homeless person they see. There's nothing selfish about it.
Well he doesn't deserve money if he wastes it on skittles to throw at people....

Ok honestly, all you people who say that OP was being selfish think about it for a second.
1. Homeless for what reason? some people are too lazy to get jobs and actually work for income. or because they are addicts.
2.when you start handing money to EVERY homeless person and donation stand then you can talk.
3. most homeless people don't spend their money on useful things, usually they buy beer or other non-essential things like skittles.
4. almost every city(if not all) that has homeless people, also have homeless shelters and soup kitchens where bums, hobos, and other homeless people can get food and sleep for little or no cost.
in conclusion, you don't give money to a homeless person, that doesn't make you selfish, and if the bum attacks you? by all means, kick his ass
Okay, he definitely shouldn't have thrown shit at you. However, it's really sad that people are saying he shouldn't get money because he uses it on Skittles. You don't know his situation, it could have been his first bag in years. Plus, if you're homeless, you can't easily get enough money to buy a nutritious meal (and getting shelter space is really hard), so sometimes it's worth it to throw in a tiny bit of money on a bag of candy because it's something that can at least brighten that moment. Also, the reason why homeless people sometimes buy alcohol is because it can help you feel warm when you have to sleep on cold hard streets.

I think these people who are saying OP is selfish have never lived in/been in a major city. I lived in NYC for 10 years, and if I gave money to every homeless person I'd be homeless myself. I also vacationed in San Francisco for two weeks, and the homeless had no values; they'd literally ask you to buy them coffee from the Starbucks, and they'd mill about for hours inside there.

I live in a city were theres not many homeless people, and i dont go into the center very often. When i do, i'll give a couple of cents too them, theres only about 4 at most, but i hardly ever see them all at once. That said, if i lived somewhere where there were many many homeless people it's not like i could afford to spend $10 every bloody day. People are idiots saying you deserved it.
If you really do give money to EVERY homeless man and EVERY donation stand then good for you but really it's not like the average person can do that. Your under no obligation to give anyone else money, and when you do, it's a gift.
Usually they are homeless in the first place because they either have addictions or have mental health issues they refuse to get help/take meds for.
Still who cares if some old man spends the money on skittles, it's not like he's gonna save it up for a cd rack and a throw rug. Still if he's out slapping people with skittles because they wont give him money then he doesn't deserve any.

Haha, 106, I didn't say that he's HAD it for years, but it could have been the first bag of Skittles he's bought in months/years/etc. Carrying it around would indeed be silly. Has anyone stopped to think that the OP gave the man the Skittles? One of my friends has had a situation where a homeless guy was asking for food and they got him a meal from McDonald's. Did he thank them? NO! He chucked the food right back at them because he really wanted to spend it on booze. My dad gave money to a homeless man once because he said he was gonna use it for food as well, he spent it on beer so my dad walked up to him and took the beer away from him.
Moral: Cut out the middle man and give them what they want the money for.
also, no one said the hobo took the skittles out and threw them one by one. it could have been the whole bag, then still in the hobo's hand. so he got his daily violence AND kept his skittles. WIN_WIN

1. To all the people calling the OP selfish, welcome to the time of debit cards. I hardly ever carry cash and when I do, it's because I made a point of getting cash from something that I couldn't pay for with a debit card--such as something from a mom & pop store that doesn't have a card reader.
2. Do some research on begging. Sure, some are legit, but others are full of it and do it as a living. I've seen shows talk about beggers who pull down $100k a year from panhandling. Even worse, some are dangerous. They wait for you to pull over, then when you're distracted, their partner appears with a metal pipe to mug you.
