Man or woman?

Today, at school, I got stuck in the elevator and was about to panic before I remembered I had my phone. I called my mother and she called the school to tell them that I was stuck. They got me out in a few minutes and then confiscated my phone and gave me two detentions for using it in school. FML

This is a fake story. After Columbine, all the schools stopped banning cell phones, and many even put up cell phone towers.

#86 - On 11/11/2009 at 2:51pm by Ox_Baker

OP didn't say that he got detention for having his phone, he got it for using his phone. Cell phones aren't banned in schools other than elementary and some middle schools, but students are banned from using them while in the school. So stop hating on the OP and calling his FML fake.

#87 - On 11/11/2009 at 3:07pm by rebash09

My old high school has banned cellphones, actually =/ People still use them, but if you get caught having one by a teacher that will tell on you.. You're screwed

#96 - On 11/11/2009 at 4:22pm by dudeitsdanny

Fuck that, I wouldn't give it to them. I'd look at them like they were crazy and go to class. I wouldn't even have to take the time explaining myself to my parents since they'd most likely be telling the admin to go to hell.

#98 - On 11/11/2009 at 4:52pm by Reyo

my school will suspend you for five days if they see a cell phone during class time. no tolerance. yep.

#103 - On 11/11/2009 at 5:28pm by PurplePoet

Not where I live #86, if they find a student with a phone on them or in their bag during school hours they take it. It's total BS, I keep mine in my bag abut turned off anyways, just in case I need it. It's a retarded rule, but unfortunately some schools have it, and enforce it.

@#56: Until you ran out of oxygen and passed out.... Dumbass.

#108 - On 11/11/2009 at 6:43pm by Fuzzy_Mama_Llama

My school still bans cell phones they've actually goten a lot stricker on them. After being caught once with your cell phone being audiable or visible (it doesn't matter if it's even turned on or in use) it's taken up and you have ISD (In School Detention) the next day. The next time you are Suspended for 3 days and the next time after that you have Alternative school for 11 days. Even if you're just calling your parents or someone for an emergency they don't care. They take your phone up and actually LOOK through it reading all txts and looking at the times too and the people on it get detention as well because they have proof that that person was texting as well. and you can't get your phone back your parent or gaurdian has to get it.

#113 - On 11/11/2009 at 8:58pm by Jujube93

cell phones aren,t banned and BTW your school has a fucking elevator? that's freigin awesome

#128 - On 11/12/2009 at 5:09pm by scarface236

It should. Also, I highly doubt this is true. It was an emergency. Unless you're seriously in some backwards hick school (which you can't possibly be since Penn Manor's elevators are only for the handicapped or injured; also I live in PA so I know hicksville) there is no conceivable way they'd punish you for freaking out and simply trying to get unstuck.

#139 - On 11/14/2009 at 12:17am by Shuinoshina

@#108 Can't run out of oxygen dumbass

...your school has elevators? what the fuck...

#2 - On 11/11/2009 at 6:14am by organisedchaos

its a rich school that doesn't even have a second floor. The elevator doesn't go anywhere. They use it in the brochure to get more students. "come to our school, we have an elevator"

#6 - On 11/11/2009 at 6:22am by Peroxide

Lots of schools have two floors, right? And the disabled kids have to get upstairs somehow, right?

good thing my school never accepted defective students. so we didnt have that issue.

#36 - On 11/11/2009 at 8:56am by organisedchaos

At my school there are three floors and one handicapped junior. Most of the time there are flat runways for her but there is also an elevator that only she and janitors can unlock because they have a key. Oh and an emergency button.

#40 - On 11/11/2009 at 9:25am by Icantfindmymommy

I went to a high school in manhattan. It was ten stories tall. Most students weren't allowed to use the elevators except for seniors with specific privileges, but there were escalators.

#45 - On 11/11/2009 at 9:52am by pleasetryagain

Not only are people with disabilities an issue, there are quite simply a lot of things that have to be hauled up and down the stairs. Do you want to carry a photocopier up two flights or would you rather someone thought ahead and put in an elevator?

#52 - On 11/11/2009 at 10:16am by trogdor_ca

lol pleasetryagain you went to stuy? i go there now

#62 - On 11/11/2009 at 11:17am by Jankae

Wow could you be more of a douche? People can't help it if they're disabled.

As for you OP, FYL but also YDI. Just because you used it during an "emergency" doesn't mean you didn't break the school rule and use a cell phone. An example would be like stealing a car in order to get to the hospital if a family member was really injured, you just can't do it.

Also, elevators have emergency call buttons for a reason, you should have used it.

#71 - On 11/11/2009 at 12:24pm by TheTruth1428

How is a high school having an elevator a surprise to you? Mine did but only for the main building and it's the slowest fucking piece of shit on earth. I had to use it for three weeks after I had knee surgery and I was consistently 5 minutes late to class when I used it because it had the speed of a box turtle.

Be lucky you had your phone. I got stuck in the dorm elevator my freshman year of college and had left my phone in my room on accident. And of course, when you have a coed hall, guys think it's funny to ring the elevator alarm just for kicks so people ignored it most of the time. Worst 20 minutes EVER.

#82 - On 11/11/2009 at 1:40pm by avoidthegirl

dont you think stealing a car is a little more extreme then using a cell phone in an emergency at school, and what if there was a masked gunmen at that school would she have gotten in trouble then, no, because its an emergency.

#83 - On 11/11/2009 at 1:41pm by shirvon100

@#71: No no no. Youza dumbass. That is not anything like this scenario and is irrelevant, so STFU. Stealing a car is nothing like that!! It'd be more like eating chocolate when you're on a diet to save you from some disease that could only be cured by chocolate. That's how you write a motherfuckin metaphor.

Dumbass.

#109 - On 11/11/2009 at 6:52pm by Fuzzy_Mama_Llama

i think i should have specified "public access" in my comment. i realise its common for schools to have elevators, ours had one too, but it was not just for general use. it seems strange that some student was able to just use the elevator like that.

oh and @71, my second comment was clearly a joke. i realise you cant help that youre disabled. see what i did there?

#118 - On 11/12/2009 at 12:22am by organisedchaos

Geez mkay I say go higher up and sue as obviously that phone saved yer life..

#4 - On 11/11/2009 at 6:19am by Cristaderzi

Sue? You must be kidding me. The OP was not going to die, staff would quite quickly find out the elevator was stuck—that would take a few hours—and fix it. Even if she was left in school for a day, that's not a long enough time to die of either starvation or dehydration, and the parents would quickly phone the school, so that they could investigate.

Secondly, the OP will get there phone back, and a few hours after school for an unjustified reason should not mean the school should be sued. Sure, complain, but no need to take money from the school because you get your phone back and an hour or two after school is a stupid reason to sue. :/

Have the schools head on a platter for unreasonable treatment. This was an emergency situation in which you had no other choice. You were not disrupting a class or using it for conversation. Maybe you could have pushed the emergency call button in the elevator, but that's no excuse for the school's actions.

#8 - On 11/11/2009 at 6:26am by yourmumspanties

My school has elevators. If the elevators are on the first floor or above it's helpful for disabled people. Ramps can often cause quite a bit of chaos, since you have got about a hundred people barging down the stairs right next to you. I do know there are school with something like four floors which would require an elevator if it had disabled people in it.

#37 - On 11/11/2009 at 8:58am by someone1989

my school building has 14 floors, (top 4 actually used by my school) so sometimes there's a reason to use the elevator

#72 - On 11/11/2009 at 12:24pm by d4m4s74

you have no clue what she was doing in that elevator so you have no right to judge. she could have been simply been doing some thing she was told to do for a teacher. they ask you to take carts up and down to other teachers all the time and that woukd be really hard without an elevator. or maybe she actually is disabled. so next time think before you go and judge someone. alls you know about her is that she got stuck in an elevator at school, and all of a sudden she's a fat american??

#77 - On 11/11/2009 at 12:50pm by hugsareoverrated

he sorry.

#78 - On 11/11/2009 at 12:54pm by hugsareoverrated

BREAKING NEWS: Some kids have wheelchairs. Any recently built 2+ story school *should* have an elevator.

Doesn't excuse this one for riding it up one or two floors, unless he broke his leg or something, in which case sorry dude.

#12 - On 11/11/2009 at 6:37am by anjyu22

FYL. That sucks for having your phone taken away. I'd go tell them that the only way to get out of the elevator was to call on his cell phone. This is like up in Maine this little girls mom sent in a cake and a knife to cut the cake with. The teacher used the knife to cut the cake and then got the little girl suspended for bringing a knife to school? WTF right?

#14 - On 11/11/2009 at 6:48am by Yanitheswimmer

#16 - On 11/11/2009 at 6:52am by himynameisadam

My high school has 10 floors, so yeah an elevator was pretty useful (of course students couldnt use it!). Still this demonstrates how brainless school officials can be.

#19 - On 11/11/2009 at 7:02am by LoveDemon

#114 - On 11/11/2009 at 9:12pm by Blah333

One of the buildings in our school has an elevator because it has 5 levels.. an older building has only 3 levels but also has an elevator... we can only use it if we have permission from a teacher.. if we need to carry a big thing with wheels or we've broken an ankle or something. They're rly cheap thoe... one of the buildings with elevators is like 150yrs old so yeahh.

#20 - On 11/11/2009 at 7:06am by KatieGoesRawrr

That sucks. I believe it, but that school is whack.

#21 - On 11/11/2009 at 7:14am by nickie226

My old elementary school had two elevators on different sides of the building, schools having elevators isn't all that abnormal. I'm not entirely sure why my school had them, we only had two floors o_0 but anyways, OP, that sucks..

#22 - On 11/11/2009 at 7:15am by SusanaSaysRawrxD

WTF?
If it clearly doesn't have a phone for you to call, then that's a MAJOR safety hazard.
I would have told them to F off if they tried to take my phone. Less you weren't supposed to be using the elevator in the first place.

#23 - On 11/11/2009 at 7:24am by BadLuckBub

I agree with artsavage...if the elevator didn't have an intercom you had to use your cell phone. I wouldn't take this one lightly even though it's two detentions and your cell phone, which they cannot keep and must return your personal property.

#25 - On 11/11/2009 at 7:33am by iplayrugby18

YDI. For one, I'm sure the school isn't 10 stories. Stop being so lazy and take the stairs. Secondly, if you can't use your phone in school, why even bring it? So yes, you deserve it for using your phone in school when you shouldn't even have it in school.

#27 - On 11/11/2009 at 7:48am by youthink

Err... your comment is like condensed autism.
Why use the stairs if the elevator is easier.
It's like telling a rugby player to run in bare feet.
And he can use his phone in school, he DID use his phone in school, it got him out of an elevator.
I like to dramatize things so....
him having his phone for that emergency is like a civilian having a gun to shoot a terrorist who is about to attack, yeah he isn't sposed to have it but it did more good than evil.
Peace!

Schools have rules. You knew that and you chose to break that rule in order to get you out of an unpleasant situation. Your school is teaching you that life can be hard and it can seem unfair. Sounds like good preparation for the real world to me.

#30 - On 11/11/2009 at 8:04am by wellinever

The no cell phone rules has the exception of using it in an emergency situation. This clearly was an emergency and your school would have to make the exception. Likely not a true story.

#33 - On 11/11/2009 at 8:38am by freerider

When I was in HS we had an elevator for the disabled kids and unfortunately also for the fat teachers (because they didn't want to take one flight of stairs??). Anyway, in order to even get on the elevator, you had to have a pass from the office which would be given to you if you had a disability or a broke leg/foot or something.

#34 - On 11/11/2009 at 8:49am by salathiel2013

Should have taken them stairs (unless you're disabled or physically unable to). Of course, you could be Fatty McGee...

"Fatty McGee, why do you keep taking the stairs?"

"[wheezing uncontrollably] I like the stairs! [still wheezing] They're fun!"

"Oh, Fatty McGee. You're the fattest!"

#35 - On 11/11/2009 at 8:52am by Brave_Sir_Robin

the way the U.S school system is set up now, teachers can get blamed for ANYTHING. "Oh a single student didn't meet our standards? FIRE THAT TEACHER! Not doing as we say cause he/she is actually a good teacher who gives a f**k about his/her students? We're cutting your funds."

So naturally this is gonna cause teachers to give a f**k less and less about morals, or about how well their students learn. They'll just scramble to keep their jobs, especially with the current job market.

I'm not justifying what the teacher, or school did; I'm only explaining why things have come to be this way.

#38 - On 11/11/2009 at 9:03am by someone1989

#46 - On 11/11/2009 at 9:53am by blastvortex

My school had the no phones rule. Of course everyone brought their phones and it made perfect sense to. You see there are these things called extra-ciricular activities. These things are after school hours and are not always on a set schedule. So often it is necessary for students to have a way to contact their parents. Oh and let's not forget, I live in Florida and was in my sophmore year of high school during the Hurricane season of 2004. I went to a school with 4000 students, so when the announcement came that they were letting us out of school early I was VERY happy to have my cell phone.

Moral of story your school was wrong.

#47 - On 11/11/2009 at 9:58am by dramatay

I doubt that the elevator would have been left unchecked for all that long. It just doesn't seem like an emergency situation to me. Typical teenage impatience followed by crying. Typical bitchy meddling school hags who live for their powertripping, as if it makes a real difference in the world whether or not a cell phone was used in an elevator at school. It all sounds so 'run of the mill' to me. :p

#61 - On 11/11/2009 at 11:07am by seesee971

I HATE high schools and all their retarded rule sets. Who gives a shit if your students are using their cell phones between class or at lunch? Who gives a shit if they pop off a quick text even in class? Seriously. Their education is on them and you don't need to make up a crap ton of arbitrary rules just to be assholes to your students with. As long as they aren't disturbing the class or the school, leave them alone.

#64 - On 11/11/2009 at 11:38am by MusicalRose

Were you allowed to be in the elevator in the first place? If it's a faculty/handicapped-only elevator, and you were sneaking in, I could certainly see them punishing you for it.

if you were allowed to be using the elevator, then it's definitely a case of someone punishing you just out of spite. Obviously, it was an emergency situation, and any normal, sane person would see that. Back when I was in high school, it was the same way - most teachers were reasonable, but some would enforce the most pointless rules just because they could.

as someone pointed out, cellphones don't work in elevators. elevators also have intercoms so that if something like this happens, YOU CAN CALL FOR HELP, and also, if you really were stuck and the intercom wasn't working and your cellphone happened to work, there is no way that they would take away your cell phone and give you two detentions.... school heads are people too, and they would probably take the situation into account

#68 - On 11/11/2009 at 12:10pm by knightviper56

Oh really? I've used my cell phone in plenty of elevators. I think perhaps you need new information. They don't always work, especially if you are going down to lower levels and basements, but I never just expect to drop a call when I walk into one.

#91 - On 11/11/2009 at 3:34pm by thefmlmo

this is fake. schools can't do that. that happened to a girl at my school and she actually got an award. I go to the strictest school in my state and it's private and all girls school. theres no way that's true.

#93 - On 11/11/2009 at 3:50pm by scenellamas

My school and many didn't un-ban phones after Columbine. In fact, many still ban them. The truth is, they can take your phone, but it's illegal for them to not return it at the end of the day. Many school boards think their rules are above state and federal laws, but unless it's a dangerous object, they HAVE to return it.

If they don't return it, have a lawyer contact them and read them the law.

Thank you public school system! Thank you once again for screwing people over and making stupid laws that make absolutely NO SENSE! I'm just glad to not have to go to school against my will anymore.

#95 - On 11/11/2009 at 4:12pm by maximus4200

A lie.

#97 - On 11/11/2009 at 4:49pm by saculmot

To Ox person- that's absolutly not true! My school has a strict no fone policy... First time is a week after school detention second is call home and meeting with prncipal 3rd is suspension in school...and we hve elevators in my school

#99 - On 11/11/2009 at 5:15pm by delly

Why on Earth would you call your mother? Why not 911 or your school? Mommy can't get you out of the elevator...

#100 - On 11/11/2009 at 5:20pm by Pennykins

She likely wouldn't know the school's phone number.

#101 - On 11/11/2009 at 5:26pm by turdburgers

And why would you bother 911 with that?

#104 - On 11/11/2009 at 5:59pm by LadyOfLannister

what a returd.

#130 - On 11/12/2009 at 6:43pm by youfaililaugh

Let your mom know. She'll be able to pitch a fit to the administration and get rid of the detentions.

#102 - On 11/11/2009 at 5:28pm by turdburgers

That sucks.
I know this isn't fake because my school would SO do that. Most schools ban phones, or say "KEEP THEM IN YOUR FREAKING LOCKER!!!"
It's all so messed up... :(

#106 - On 11/11/2009 at 6:36pm by scarletdragonfly

That is fake. Theres no way you would get in trouble for telling someone to help you cuz your stuck in an elevator

#107 - On 11/11/2009 at 6:41pm by Nighta9

you're school's fucked up.

#110 - On 11/11/2009 at 7:32pm by xSceneSceneBabyx

You called your mommy?! Ha, ha! Why not just push the button in the elevator that calls for help. Wuss ; )

#111 - On 11/11/2009 at 7:50pm by Erindub

i'd tell them to fuck off

#115 - On 11/11/2009 at 9:38pm by thekingjoe90

#120 - On 11/12/2009 at 12:48am by Cheyenne_Stone

#121 - On 11/12/2009 at 1:02am by moomoomilkchan

the staff are probably obese Americans

#122 - On 11/12/2009 at 2:05am by iGrenade

Actually, you have a right not to give up your phone even if they ask for it. They're not allowed to yank it out of your hands or pocket.
I agree it's very unfair that you got two detentions... I always carry my phone around at school even though you're not supposed to - it makes me feel a lot safer. I'm usually very nervous without my phone and that added sense of security >.>

#123 - On 11/12/2009 at 2:22am by OLOtheDemigodess

There's no way this is true!! What admin would feel it necessary to take you're phone cause you used it while trapped in an elevator?

#124 - On 11/12/2009 at 3:00am by helloello

There's no way this isn't a fake story.

#125 - On 11/12/2009 at 3:26am by israelnotjacob

don't go to detention, blow it off & make your parents argue your case to the principal-it's always more effective when it comes from the parent(s)

#126 - On 11/12/2009 at 5:22am by TheChanel

NO way, this is 100% fake

#127 - On 11/12/2009 at 4:50pm by TheECP

WHOA. you have a freaking ELEVATOR at your SCHOOL?
Damn, high-class much, lol.

#129 - On 11/12/2009 at 6:41pm by youfaililaugh

My school is two stories high, and yes, there is an elevator. Two, in fact. One is for handicapped people, which I believe is required for schools with two stories or more. The other is used mainly for large equipment (e.g. band instruments etc.), and it technically isn't supposed to be used unless necessary, but we use it all the time anyway. The nearest staircase from that elevator is more than 100 meters away, so it's just a matter of time convienience, not laziness, which is the case when the staircase is right next to the elevator.

#131 - On 11/12/2009 at 10:45pm by Ziwhtam

if they would have asked for my phone i would have walked away cussing about how i had to sit in the fucking elevator and i wouldnt have give them a dam thing.

Hey iGrenade! Us Americans take great pride in our gun-carrying, walmart-shopping, McDonalds-eating, bible-crazed, (not saying all bible readers are crazy : ) trailer-living, derby-watching, NASCAR-loving, best-healthcare-worst-system, white-as-hell, "patriots!" WHITE POWER!!!!! lol!!!!!!!!! jk! jk! ; )

#133 - On 11/13/2009 at 12:23am by Guitarist45

Yay zero-tolerance! It's really more of an insult to the teachers and administrators than it is to you, so don't take it too personally. But FYL.

#134 - On 11/13/2009 at 3:04am by FoundManyLemons

Well that's not right but who gives, get your mom up there and she'll get it back.

#135 - On 11/13/2009 at 3:09am by Honda288

#136 - On 11/13/2009 at 6:05pm by ILoveMyLifeSoMuc

Only in america..

#137 - On 11/13/2009 at 8:36pm by Morphs

Wtf. I never understood those schools who does not allow students to use their phones. Of course, you're not supposed to use them in class, but there's no good reason not to use them during lunch and between classes.

#138 - On 11/13/2009 at 10:02pm by Cameo

Lol, two detentions. Is it really that big of a deal?

#140 - On 11/14/2009 at 4:23am by taqholic

i live in Pennsylvania and this happened to my friend too. except she was hurt and in the bathroom at school and called her mom. her mom called the nurse to go get her. she did. and when she got there she took her phone and gave her detentions for using it in school.

#141 - On 11/14/2009 at 2:51pm by godmylife

Fuck High School

#142 - On 11/26/2009 at 7:26pm by Schmuty

That's such bs that schools do that. I can understand banning the use of cell phones in the classroom and such, but there should be exceptions in situations like these.
