Man or woman?

Today, I was at a Remembrance Day service when an old widow told me I had my "grandad's" medals on the wrong side of my coat. I told her that I was an Afghanistan veteran and that they were mine. She then berated me in front of the WHOLE service for "lying". FML

FYL, #49/50, for being disrespectful to a veteran of any nation.

OP, thank you for serving your country. :) I'm sorry that an ignorant/senile/rude old woman did something like that to you. You should be proud of what you have done, and I hope this experience doesn't mar it for you.

I and those veteran who came out clean and spoke on media against the Afghan war speak for humanity. And you and this guy with medals talk about so called respect. Go eat it!

#53 - On 11/11/2009 at 2:28pm by wtfwts

Do any of you even know what the Taleban do? Every year hundreds of woman cover themselves in petrol and set alight to it, trying to kill themselves, as it is the only way to escape from the arrange marriages forced on them by the people we are fighting against. This may not be the entire reason we started the war, but it is definitely why we should continue it. Every soldier who dies valiantly in combat will save the lives of thousands of men, woman and children who choose not to follow every single word in the K'oran.

And anyway, the Afghan war is way more justified than the Falklands war, and you never hear people insulting that one, do you? (doesn't apply to non-Brits)

#56 - On 11/11/2009 at 3:02pm by IambecomeRAWR

You speak for humanity? Then speak out and denounce evils that are done, not specifically insulting the people who go to stop it. I am not naive, I am sure that cruelties have been committed by soldiers on all sides- American, Canadian, British, Australian, Taliban alike, and the others who flock to the banner of ANY war.

What gives you the right to speak out and denounce one side before any others and claim you are speaking for humanity?

Our soldiers are fighting a greater evil. They are fighting a self-inflicted genocide, by a regime that is headed by crueler, bloodthirstier men than our Presidents or Prime Ministers. They are fighting dictators who have no check-and-balance system, who drive some of their own women to suicide and tell their children to strap themselves with bombs.

How dare you claim to speak for humanity?

#57 - On 11/11/2009 at 3:27pm by what_about_it

You don't speak for me, dipshit. I don't agree with everything the military-- mine, right now, especially-- has done and I don't believe patriotism is not questioning the military. I do believe that it takes courage to risk your life every day you go to work, though. I do believe that people in the military have done deeply admirable things throughout history, and that they deserve to be acknowledged for standing up the face of inexcusable evil and saying, "No." They (and their families) have paid serious dues. You can wank on the internet all you like, but don't say you speak for me. You don't.

#65 - On 11/11/2009 at 5:33pm by pope_suburban

more justifiable than the falklands war, you are joking arent you??? the falklands war was fought by the british to protect a british land, with british people living there, who didnt want to be argentinian, but british, and the afghan war is being fought to prevent terrorism and to protect western nations against extremist faggots, and to make life better for the locals in afghanistan, but the falklands war was much more important than the war in afghanistan will ever be, for a start the taliban arent even a uniformed armed forces, so the western countries will never win as the rules of engagement forbid us from descending to the talibans level.

#70 - On 11/11/2009 at 6:40pm by AAARRRRGGGGHHHHH

The OP isn't saying that we should all respect him for being an Afghan war veteran. But it's standard practice to wear your medals at a military service of any kind and he's saying f his life because the old woman started yelling at him and calling him a liar during

#80 - On 11/11/2009 at 8:55pm by keiran215

But the REAL question is: Was he actually lying?

#83 - On 11/11/2009 at 9:55pm by reapfml

he was DOING his JOB. I don't recall any soldiers approaching their political leaders and saying "oh, btw, could we go to war in Afghanistan plz?"

#96 - On 11/12/2009 at 2:44am by LilaBear

Actually....In Canada, our forces in Afghanistan are made up of militia, to the tune of 20 to 30% in each and every Roto. These part time soldiers do everything from being in infantry sections, quick reaction force, provincial reconstruction teams, to police mentoring. Not only are they all volunteers to wear a uniform, but each and every one of them has volunteered for Afghanistan. Militia cannot be ordered to war, they must volunteer. They do not have to go, but they do, in droves. Im not sure of the casualty rates for militia, but several dozen have been killed or wounded. So...yeah, they actually DID say: Send me to Afghanistan...please!

#105 - On 11/12/2009 at 4:43pm by bookman796

Do you even know what the TALIBAN is? You're an idiot if you think the 'Taliban' and 'Islam' are the same thing. Illiterate warmonger.

#115 - On 11/13/2009 at 2:26pm by Th4thurt

Agreed. Old bitch needs what's coming to her.

#118 - On 11/14/2009 at 12:20am by Shuinoshina

(Directed at #56)
I'm confused as to how you're relating the Taliban to marital affairs in other nations. And are you referring to the ancient practice in which women by choice set themselves alight on their husband's funeral pyre? Because I hardly see why we should wage a war over cultural differences. Although I would believe you if you were referring to a small number who are forced to do this, it's not some pandemic.

that being said, thank you for the service you've done for America. Although I may not support the war itself, I still believe that you and all the other soldiers overseas today are American Heroes.

How very disrespectful of her. Even if she thought you were lying she had no right to accuse you in front of everyone.
And at a service? even if you were lying that is not the place to make a scene. shes just as bad as what she was accusing you of doing, upsetting everyone who is trying to pay theri respects at the service

#10 - On 11/11/2009 at 7:07am by LoveDemon

The OP is obviously young so the old woman probably assumed the medals belonged to one of his elders, most likely grandfather. I doubt the OP would refer to his grandmother as "an old widow".

I don't. Australias involment in Afganistan is ridiculous. We're only there because Howard would lick the shit from Bush's asshole.

#37 - On 11/11/2009 at 11:28am by maisie2

WOW, you are an idiot. Australian troops are still in afghanistan, and last time i checked Kevin Rudd is the current PM of Australia and Obama is the President of the US.

#39 - On 11/11/2009 at 12:03pm by mickyblueeyes

Bush is gone, you idiot.
catch up on current events smartass.

#41 - On 11/11/2009 at 12:05pm by Phoenix_GAD

Congratulations on not only having incredibly flawed logic, but also lacking the capacity to keep up on current events!

#47 - On 11/11/2009 at 1:46pm by avoidthegirl

Well I know who the current leaders are, but Howard wouldn't have sent the troops there if Bush hadn't asked him too. I can only hope Rudd isn't so easily influenced and removes the troops as per his election promise. Although Rudd's current handling of the refugee situation isn't a good indication of his future leadership.

Perhaps I shouldn't have used such harsh language, but I truly believe that Australian troops have absolutely no role in Afganistan.

#89 - On 11/11/2009 at 11:37pm by maisie2

maisie2, learn a thing or two. Rudd is in charge of Australia now, and he is still sending troops into Afghanistan. I know a guy over there right now, and one of my friends is deploying in January.

Unlike Iraq, most people think Afghanistan is a worthy war. They threw the first punch, so to say, by flying planes into buildings on foreign soil and killing thousands of innocent people. Last I checked that is a pretty legitimate reason to go to war. WW1 was started over the assassination of a prince, so I think a war on the Taliban over the deaths of thousands of innocents is legitimate. And we are the US's allies, allies help each other during wars.

Most of the Australian troops over there at the moment are part of Reconstruction Task Forces and are helping to train the new Afghan military and helping them get back on their feet and run their own country. Our soldiers did not ask to be sent to war, they are doing their job. So shut your face and stop being so disrespectful to people who are only doing their job, and risking their life to do so.

#97 - On 11/12/2009 at 2:53am by LilaBear

And, thanks for serving!!

#14 - On 11/11/2009 at 7:40am by SenGaeriel

In australia? Probably the only afghan vet in the whole country.

#35 - On 11/11/2009 at 10:42am by czforester

there might have been other afghan vets there, but who's to say they served with him and know who he is??

One 'o' short of WIN!
Thanks, OP.

#17 - On 11/11/2009 at 7:58am by UncombedCoconut

You know the truth. Wear your medals with pride and simply ignore a confused old woman. She has probably had to deal with more people disrepecting what her husband did than you can imagine. In fact you may well face more of that yourself over time. This uncaring society doesn't pay it's due to those of you who have served. Those who do salute you.

#18 - On 11/11/2009 at 7:58am by wellinever

you should've shouted "TERRORIST" and tackled her to the ground.
now THAT would be awesome.

thank you for your service. you are a hero

#20 - On 11/11/2009 at 8:08am by i_luv_cheese

For all the people calling the old woman a bitch, she may very well be senile, if she thinks that the OP is wearing the service dress and medals her husband ( deceased I presume) wore several decades back. They may even look similar..

#21 - On 11/11/2009 at 8:09am by Darthbane2007

I think you're reading too much into this. The OP is obviously young so the old woman assumed they belonged to one of his elders, she wasn't his grandmother or thought that she was.

#22 - On 11/11/2009 at 8:37am by Starayo

#21 isn't saying she was his grandmother, just that the medals may have looked like something people from her generation (husband, brother, etc.) received after coming back from a war. And since the OP IS likely young... his grandfather or someone would likely be from that same generation.

#24 - On 11/11/2009 at 8:47am by FPsLife

That sux but I'll say thank you for your service

#25 - On 11/11/2009 at 8:55am by IdolChatter

Just state that you're not lying and leave it? I'm sure it's one bitch of a feeling getting accused of lying publicly after what you've given up to serve, but hell....some people won't even be grateful you served at all.

Be proud of what you know you've done. Don't worry about a distressed elderly woman and what accusations she might throw at you.

#26 - On 11/11/2009 at 8:57am by someone1989

@stolentrix
Canada has an army?

#28 - On 11/11/2009 at 9:04am by MnBran6

Not only does Canada have an army, we also have a navy and an air force. Google "Vimy Ridge" for some information on what Canadians did to aid in the creation of Remembrance day. My grandfather (Canadian) fought in WWII in the air force and there are Canadians over in the middle east right now. But I do suppose your country fought for your right to be ignorant if you choose.

#33 - On 11/11/2009 at 10:16am by tiffanyheart

Canada lost over 60,000 men in WWI. Yes, it has an army. It just doesn't cause news worthy scenes.

#34 - On 11/11/2009 at 10:34am by Vaetrus

#33, don't forget WWI and the Korean War, and the Cold War/nuclear arms race.

#28, the Canadian army has a long history in fighting in major wars and going on peacekeeping missions. Just because we don't invade other countries to steal their oil and dispose of their leaders doesn't mean we don't have an army.

#72 - On 11/11/2009 at 6:47pm by kazkazkazkaz

Way I understand it, Canada has one of the most advanced armed forces in the world. I don't know if it's true, but I believe it. Remember Katrina? Canadian rescue workers were there before American!

FYL? More like FHL. Hopefully most people there were a lot less senile than she was, and she must have ended up getting the dirty looks by disrespecting a veteran on this day.

#30 - On 11/11/2009 at 9:29am by joethebiden

So? There are probably enough people in the room who knew the old bag was full of crap. Besides that, I'd suspect that plenty of people in the room were pissed that she dishonored the services by her little tirade. Be nice and take it like a man.

#31 - On 11/11/2009 at 9:57am by blastvortex

wow wouldn't worry about it the lady was prob senile thanks for serving

#32 - On 11/11/2009 at 10:03am by Starfire22

Take no notice of it. If she wants to be a total bitch, let her do that, she has no proof to make a valid accusation that you were lying. Also, most of the congregation probably disliked her too, due to her ruining the silence or lectures due to her bitchy immaturity. At the end of the day, there is no need to even explain this to anyone: she ruined the ceremony with futile blabbering, and accused you without evidence.

#36 - On 11/11/2009 at 11:04am by Kervik

What a bitch. Well, even if she wants to be disrespectful to you, I thank you for your services. I love the US military. Thank you so much for everything you've done. Happy veterans day!

True that.

#44 - On 11/11/2009 at 12:36pm by allie2590

Wow a real FML!
That lady is a bitch. Senile or not that does not make it ok for her to cause a scene. Even if she thought he was lying, it's not her place and since she had someone in the service she should know how to be respectful to people who have served.

#45 - On 11/11/2009 at 1:17pm by KarasuFyre

Should have kicked her in the hip.

#46 - On 11/11/2009 at 1:42pm by TylerDurdenUMD

out of interest and meaning no disrespect, why were you wearing your badges on the wrong side? cheers for your service though, old chap.

#48 - On 11/11/2009 at 1:54pm by lifesfine09

In Australia veterans wear their medals on one side while grandsons or relatives representing a veteran wear the medals on the other side, this old woman thought he was supposed to wear the medals on the representing a veteran side of his chest.

#127 - On 11/20/2009 at 1:43am by annoyingbrother

vets think too highly of themselves anyways....... why did we go to Afghanistan again?

#52 - On 11/11/2009 at 2:22pm by eoswald

Are you kidding me? Think too highly of themselves? It wasn't the vets choice to go to Afghanistan or anywhere else they may have been deployed, but it was their choice to selflessly enlist in the Armed Forces, which is HIGHLY commendable. I'd like to see you even attempt to do the same. DOUCHEBAG.

OP- Thank you for selflessly fighting to protect the Freedom which many take for granted.

#54 - On 11/11/2009 at 2:44pm by XScarlet

We went to Afghanistan to destroy a corrupt theocracy that didn't let women have any rights, killed homosexuals on principal, drafted children to be suicide bombers, and was one of the most opressive regimes in recent memory.

OP - thanks for serving. From one vet to another.

#55 - On 11/11/2009 at 2:53pm by Emperor_Jim

What #55 said, and also to build schools for children, help repair irrigation and farming equipment damaged by Taliban attacks, and working with village leaders to root out terrorists.

Seriously, before you act like an asshole at least learn a little bit about what is going on in Afghanistan first.

#73 - On 11/11/2009 at 6:49pm by kazkazkazkaz

#63 - On 11/11/2009 at 5:09pm by livelaughlove782

I've noticed that Canadians don't really fight too much. Sure they have an army, but they rarely use it. Canadians are cool like that. Even though I am not Canadian, I respect them. :)

#64 - On 11/11/2009 at 5:20pm by Zamax

Uh, we're using our army right now in Afghanistan. We've been there since 2001. The government has announced they're going to start pulling the Armed Forces out, but they won't be gone until 2011.

Before that, we were doing NATO missions all over the world and various peacekeeping/human rights missions. Before that was the Gulf war, the Cold War, and the Korean War, and then WWII and WWI.

#74 - On 11/11/2009 at 6:54pm by kazkazkazkaz

Pardon? We (Canada) has participated in more conflicts than your country lol. Just between the Korean war, and the Afghan war, we participated in 57 seperate conflict operations, mostly under UN auspices. The reason you do not hear of this, is becasue your media does not report it. The major difference between our armies is not the amount they are used, its the how and why. Our military is used becasue we are asked by other countries to intervene, not for *Canadian interest*. We go to the places without oil, and without industry, or without exports. We go becasue we are needed, and becasue we are asked. Then we come home. I personally havnt served in almost 20 years, but the lads today do just as much good as the lads in my day, and I'm proud of them.

I don't know what number you are, but, Obama may be president, but he sure as hell isn't my president, he's worthless, and he's putting our country into a worse crisis, I'm sure if anyone reads this they'll dog on me, but I refuse to accept obama as my president

#68 - On 11/11/2009 at 6:11pm by Ky_123

same here. and if people want to talk shit, let 'em.

#69 - On 11/11/2009 at 6:25pm by FATTY_MCDOOGLE

Err... heads up, now that he IS president, you don't exactly get a choice in the matter of "accepting him" as your president or not. He's the president, grow a pair and live with it.

As to "he sure as hell isn't my president", read above.

Also, how the HELL can Obama be putting the US into a worse crisis than Bush managed? Please, explain.

#71 - On 11/11/2009 at 6:40pm by headboarder

Headboarder - I trust you were also against the people who proudly rejected Bush as their president.

Also, Obama seems to be steering towards a possible huge debt crisis and is looking at restricting individual liberties even further - but other than that, he isn't really doing anything different from Bush on the 'crisis' front. Not that he isn't doing any good things, but that's not what your question was.

OP: You have my respect for restraining from tearing her a new one - either figuratively or literally. I know several soldiers who wouldn't have kept as composed as you evidently were. Thanks for your service, and stay safe.

#76 - On 11/11/2009 at 7:12pm by jack_squat

You would be correct. While I don't believe Bush was a good president, he was still elected twice by the nation and that would make him the president, whether some people liked it or not.

#101 - On 11/12/2009 at 10:09am by headboarder

OP you are awesome. Don't let that crazy old bitch get you down.

#75 - On 11/11/2009 at 6:56pm by kazkazkazkaz

While I may not necessarily agree with the politics that brought the world to Afghanistan in the first place, you can't rag on the vets. They don't make the decisions on where and who to fight. They just do teir jobs. And no matter how you feel about any given war, you have to give them that. Thanks, OP, for doing your duty.

And...well, you know. Some people, right?

#77 - On 11/11/2009 at 7:36pm by tutlens

Also, #56, you can't stop arranged marriages from happening just because you invade the country. The more you try to stop people from their culture and traditions, you will find that they cling to them. And it's not the fathers who arrange these marriages, it's the mothers. In most cases. The father is the enforcer. In Canada, there are still people who adhere by arranged marriages, from different backgrounds. There is nothing to stop this at all. In some cases, it is the same as using an online matchmaking service: the couple dates for a few months till they marry. In some cases, it is more forceful, but so far not that many have tried to stop this from happening. Sad, but true.

Canada definitely has an army. It's just smaller because it's volunteer based as opposed to Israel's which is conscription based.

#93 - On 11/12/2009 at 12:30am by cecilia_weasley

My ex is from canada and he says Canada doesn't have an army. it's called a "peace force". I'd say someone could invade them and nothing would happen... except no one really wants canadians as citizens.

#94 - On 11/12/2009 at 1:42am by Kat33393

Your Ex is talking out his hat. It is not and has never been called a peace force, ever. It is the army madam, and this army defeated yours when your country invaded us....twice. We have also done more of the heavy lifting in Afghanistan than any other army. Stop watching Fox Noise, propaganda is not information, or history.

FTW for having wars.

Maybe the old bitch died tonight... It would be her YDI

#99 - On 11/12/2009 at 4:39am by andrewms

I suspect this posting is fake or that the OP is not a vet. If the old lady had the motive to go to a remembrance service she would likely know the correct side to wear medals. If the OP is a serving or ex soldier, he would know too. No soldier would wear his medals on the wrong side. The OP himself is the one showing disrespect to the armed forces and should be taken to task for this. All vets deserve more than this shit!

#102 - On 11/12/2009 at 11:49am by pendatic

Dunno if this is the same everywhere, but I know some people wear medals on the opposite side if they belonged to a family member/ancestor rather than the person themself. So it's possible it is true and the woman thought that he was wearing an ancestor's medals on the wrong side, as I believe was said in the original post?

#103 - On 11/12/2009 at 4:17pm by headboarder

In Canada (and some other Commonwealth nations), you wear your own gongs on the left breast, but many also wear their fathers/grandfathers gongs on the right breast as a show of respect. What I do is wear mine on the left, and my dads (WWII) and granddads (WWI) on the right on the inside of my jacket....no one needs to see em, so I don't display em.

#104 - On 11/12/2009 at 4:33pm by bookman796

Thanks for the clarification people, but the OP stated they were his medals...

#111 - On 11/13/2009 at 4:59am by pendatic

Right...which would place them on the left hand side. The old bird was complaining that they were not on the right hand side, being his granddads...so from her (wrong) perspective they were on the wrong side.

#117 - On 11/13/2009 at 6:16pm by bookman796

hmm....good info. I had no idea.

Thanks for the education headboarder and bookman!

#108 - On 11/12/2009 at 5:29pm by Xader

thats shit bro. the fact that she called you a liar in front of the service is the highest disrespect to you as a soldier and a person. whatever her history is, war widow or whatever, she, nobody for that matter, has the right to question some one after making a claim like that. im an aussie soldier and integrity is one of the main things i pride myself on

#109 - On 11/12/2009 at 5:52pm by seamus87

YDI for being in the military at all.

#112 - On 11/13/2009 at 10:44am by BlackGasoline

FUCK YOU #112.
"YDI for being in the military at all."

How rude and disgusting of a person are you that you would say that about those who serve our country to keep us safe. My own brother just returned from iraq and I have never been so proud of him. I'm sorry for those who have lost love because of wars, and I apologize for being so profane with my language, but how dare you wake up in the morning, and walk outside and still say YDI. You wouldn't have an outside to walk to, you'd either be dead or enslaved if it wasn't for our braved military fighters.
So, in conclusion, fuck you 112. And because their comments were removed, I feel like I should also throw a fuck you to 49 & 50.

Disgraces to society.

#113 - On 11/13/2009 at 12:09pm by princessjane

you should feel so proud. I hope that women goes to hell for that remark.

She was probably a dirty muslim. You should have kicked her in her dry old pussy.

Imo anyone who willingly puts them-self in harms way is a moron.
Wars are fought for stupid reasons, from leaders not liking each other, to commodities such as oil.

That said, I'm glad they do, so i dont have to!
I would never let my family join =3 too much of a risk.

#120 - On 11/15/2009 at 10:44pm by Drain

Just to let you know, I am one of those morons. You really do make some valid arguments, especially for countries such as the U.S. or the U.K. There are also wars of conquest, and wars to extend opression, and wars for genicide. In this I agree with you. However, there are other countries, and other armies. I was personally involved in 3 conflicts. One was in Namibia, where we went into a mess, and left with them being a free democratic country, with a security force capable of protecting themselves. One was Cyprus, where we stood between the Greeks and Turks and prevented them from killing each other. The last was Bosnia, where we protected civilians of all three sides, from genocide. In none of these cases was there any benefit whatsoever to my country (Canada). There was no oil, no resources, no industry to speak of. We went becasue we were asked, and we were needed. The OP served in Afghanistan with the Australian army. There is no benefit for Oz in being there either. The reason his country, and mine have forces there, is for the following reasons: Women who vote, have their fingers cut off. Little girls are punished for the crime of going to school by having acid thrown in their faces. Women who are raped, are killed after...because they allowed themselves to be raped. And becasue teenaged boys are conned into wearing suicide vests and blowing up countless innocent people. If you think this is moronic of us to try and stop, really, I can only pity you. Yes, people like myself, and the OP put ourselves into harms way, but no greater love hath he then that lay down his life for his brother. I have not served in Afghanistan...too old now. But I honour and respect the OP for doing what I can no longer do. He isnt a moron.

#122 - On 11/16/2009 at 2:03pm by bookman796

bookman 796, that is one of the best arguments for being in Afghanistan that I have heard. My government (English) has tried to convince us we should be there for years, and failed. What you wrote was perfect. Thank you. My respect to you and all soldiers, especially The Commonwealth ones who gave so much for so little thanks during WWII.

#123 - On 11/16/2009 at 5:36pm by pendatic

120# You obviously are a selfish prick who hates their country

#128 - On 11/20/2009 at 1:50am by annoyingbrother

Oh wow :| that is actually terrible.

As are some of the comments on here >:[ just because you don't agree with the war, doesn't mean you have to be so disrespectful to people that are fighting for their country. As far as the old lady goes, what she did was terrible, especially during and infront of the service.

Much respect to the OP for fighting for what they believe in

#121 - On 11/16/2009 at 10:42am by lauraohyeah

Since when is war over resources a bad thing? Resources such as oil, food, land, water and sweet sweet stem cells. I'm an American and I will not rest until all muslim cockroaches are dead or dying, and not a precious drop of black gold remains in that festering shit hole.

#124 - On 11/16/2009 at 10:40pm by steevy831

Yeah, I feel you. Everybody has the idea that vets are 60 year old men. Most of us aren't anymore. You're by far not the only one this has happened to.
