Man or woman?

Today, I was teaching a ten year old how to play piano. Halfway through the lesson, she made a minor mistake, which, trying to be a good tutor, I corrected her. She smiled up at me, paused, then slammed the key cover down onto my fingers. FML

That kid is AWESOME!!!! You totally deserve this one. I would be pissed too if my tutor instead of telling me verbally lays his/her hands on keys while I am on the seat.

#69 - On 11/11/2009 at 1:08am by wtfwts

wtf #69? Are you also 10? Please go die.

#77 - On 11/11/2009 at 3:58am by Edumacated

Dude, when I was ten and learning piano the tutor often sat on the bench next to me and would help me correct things by playing them so that I could see and hear what was wrong. How is touching the piano when you're a PIANO INSTRUCTOR a faux pas?

#90 - On 11/11/2009 at 9:59am by pleasetryagain

Dude, go fuck yourself you goddamn brat.

#102 - On 11/11/2009 at 5:38pm by Boxingsweets

wtfwts - the kid was TEN YEARS OLD, not some accomplished pianist who knows what they are doing. It's common for a piano teacher to put their hands on the keyboard to demonstrate how to do something.

#108 - On 11/12/2009 at 2:58am by LilaBear

Ten years old is plenty old enough to know that such an action would hurt someone's fingers. At this age, it's just scary and psychopathic behavior. If I were in your shoes, I would release this "client" from further lessons.

#3 - On 11/10/2009 at 8:38pm by Jewelofagal

I second that.

#13 - On 11/10/2009 at 8:54pm by LeeIsAwesome

Haha i bet her name is Esther. You better watch out...

#14 - On 11/10/2009 at 8:55pm by Shereen15

I thought the same. That kid is a psycho.

#39 - On 11/10/2009 at 10:03pm by fegd

Agreed. My off-the-cuff response? Bitchslap that kid and drop her as a client.

I mean, how the hell does a kid end up being that much of an ass? It's especially bad considering those hands that just got slammed are the OP's tools of livelihood.

#94 - On 11/11/2009 at 12:21pm by Watchmaker

Sue her parents! You won't have to work for a while now :)

#4 - On 11/10/2009 at 8:41pm by InfectedWithDrew

This happened in the UK, not the US.

#37 - On 11/10/2009 at 9:55pm by tabernac

If your fingers needed medical attention, her parents should at least foot the bill.

#37 For the Win!!! So true hahahaha

#61 - On 11/11/2009 at 12:21am by Jeef27

#40 this happened in the UK; where we have the NHS.
No daft insurance companies/medical bills to pay, unlike the USA. We might wait forever in A&E waiting rooms but whatever - it's free :)

#91 - On 11/11/2009 at 10:08am by bbsfdwdw

What a brat! I used to teach lessons. Tell her parent to either discipline their fucking kid or forget coming back. Their choice. If they've let their kid get to age 10 with this kind of behavior, they should be ashamed. God I hate parents these days.

#5 - On 11/10/2009 at 8:42pm by nonynony

I agree. Parents do a shitty job these days. It makes me wonder if they're afraid of the kid, or if they're just too fucking lazy to do anything to teach the kid right from wrong. A ten year old should have enough common sense to know that they shouldn't do things like that. After all, a teacher is there to help you correct your mistakes, not pick on you.

#15 - On 11/10/2009 at 8:57pm by OhhxGoshhxAri

I agree with both of you, #5 and #15. I think it's a combination of the laziness of parents, selfishness of the parents ("Oh, I worked all day today, I'm in no mood to yell at my kid for beating the crap out his schoolmates!"), fear of their kids (although with a kid like this, if she does this to a stranger I wonder what she does to her parents), and parents wanting to be a friend first. Teach your kids manners and how behave like normal human beings. You can be friends with your kids, but you can't let that get in the way of raising them properly.

#8 - On 11/10/2009 at 8:42pm by Dcvictorious

If I'm the teacher, next time I'd correct her mistake by slamming the cover on her fingers.

Just because her artistic interpretation of that musical passage didn't happen to agree with your rigid, prejudiced concept of it doesn't mean you have the right to call it a "mistake" and humiliate her by "correcting" her. Therefore, YDI!

Now you know why our kids are turning out so well these days.

#20 - On 11/10/2009 at 9:09pm by perdix

Novice mistake could possibly mean "playing the wrong note(s)" or potentially not holding a note/rest it's due amount of time, in which case she should be instructed of the musically correct way to INTERPERET these specifities. As a new found player of piano, it is implied that the student is learning to play what music is given them as is, in order to become familiar with the dynamics of music (as opposed to coming up with their own interpretation). So you can pretty much stop pretending like you know more than everyone else =)

#26 - On 11/10/2009 at 9:20pm by OnTheSaneSide

@ #26,
I think you misunderstood, #20 was being sarcastic.

#30 - On 11/10/2009 at 9:28pm by madeleinemai

lol I think 26 wants people to know their new found talent :P

#31 - On 11/10/2009 at 9:30pm by Dcvictorious

See, you kinda neglected the little sarcastic note at the end.

In the first paragraph, I was taking the tone of one of those asshole parents who thinks their child can do no wrong and wonders why their kid ends up a morbidly obese cave dweller dependent on psychotropic drugs by age 11. In the second one, I make a remark that rejects that kind of thinking.

Now that you get it, are you L'ing Y FAO?

If not, here's one for you: YDI for being a whore!

#33 - On 11/10/2009 at 9:33pm by perdix

I believe 20's comment is actually more satire than sarcasm because he is exaggerating something realistic. There are plenty of parents out there who truly believe that "humiliating their child" by correcting their mistakes or punishing them will "ruin their self-esteem;" therefore, their children must be allowed to do whatever they want.

#44 - On 11/10/2009 at 10:17pm by iwadasn

#28 - On 11/10/2009 at 9:26pm by ChuckDangerz

You have clearly never been a coach or instructor. Some children are fine and dandy and very manageable, others are difficult to manage but can be handled by experienced instructors, and others are absolute demons who are impossible to predict or control. So be quiet.

#45 - On 11/10/2009 at 10:22pm by dsrs3777

Screw that, 7 was my cut off age when I was a babysitter because after that they are unruly and not a problem I want to deal with. Ship that kid off to friggin boarding school and straighten up her attitude.

Psycho!

#29 - On 11/10/2009 at 9:28pm by JP101

I would deride her every mistake next time. Push her to, and then over the limit. Causing someone mental hell is much better physical abuse. No scars, and it takes years to heal. You can end her piano playing days.

Omg, im sorry but that little girl sounds bad ass.

#68 - On 11/11/2009 at 1:08am by PonPonPattaPon

I would've done the exact same thing. My teacher knows better than to go up and say "You played wrong notes, fix it." He would correct me and say " Hey, make sure to check your key." Also, he would adress it to the whole section not just me. Or he would make a big joke out of it. I play the flute. Not the piano. Piano is for sissies.

#70 - On 11/11/2009 at 1:46am by Tigg3r

soooo.....you would have slammed down the cover of your flute?

#71 - On 11/11/2009 at 2:02am by Kukua

Yes,I concur. The flute is the manliest instrument ever, played by only the manliest of macho men.

Then again,you're BLOWING on something,so...

OP,take a leaf out of Family Guy and hook up the keys with electricity.Every time she plays the wrong key she'll get a shock. She'll learn by herself.Call child services and report her parents for negligent parenting as well. The whole 9 yards. Then you sit on your recliner and pet your cat while cackling evilly as you ruin the lives of another family.

#73 - On 11/11/2009 at 2:14am by alpha_beta

piano is for sissies?! Biggest pet peeve to hear people say "oh you just have to press keys." Believe it or not it is a lot harder then that. And no, i'm not saying the flute is easy, never played it so i'm sure it is difficult as well.

Anyway.. I've taught for several years now, and that kid would be in so much trouble if they did that to me. A piano lid slammed on the fingers would hurt like hell, its bad enough when i accidentally caught a finger once :S

Talk to the parent and tell them to discipline their beastly child.

#76 - On 11/11/2009 at 3:22am by fakkumairaifu

So she's a kid. Expect her to act like one. It wouldn't hurt to tell her mother/farther/guardian about it though. Behavioral issues that need to be fixed pronto, and if you're not prepared to do it yourself (which you should since the child is in your care at the time), then you need to get her folk(s) to do it for you.

#80 - On 11/11/2009 at 4:42am by blastvortex

You expect a ten year old to act like a ten year old. Which means throwing a fit. Not acts of violence.

#88 - On 11/11/2009 at 8:58am by Kickmehard

Ah, the interesting trap. She can't hurt the child or she will end up arrested for child abuse. In fact, I'm not sure what you could do that wouldn't make this a possibility. Kids make up stories, and parents of a monster like this are likely to believe them. Assuming you want to walk the line, scare the crap out of her instead. Smile evily, say, "That was not wise." Get up from the bench. "I'll be riiiiight back." Then leave her there for the rest of the lesson wondering what you are going to do to her. Fear cuts deeper than swords.

Regardless of what the parents say, I would never teach a heathen like that again. If you agree to teach her again, you validate what she did. She'll learn more if you refuse to see her again, and maybe the parents will be embarrassed enough to do something about her.

Btw, I can't believe there are people defending the child. You can't take a correction when you are wrong, so it's okay to physically harm your tutor? Seriously?! Grow up.

#87 - On 11/11/2009 at 8:58am by Improbability

the simplest solution - do the same to her is I'm afraid impossible. Or at least really risky.
Maybe immature but nevertheless it would be sweet to beat the shit out of annoying stupid brat ;P

I would stop lesson immediately, called her parents to take their kid ASAP and used whatever legal actions are available (if you can't play for some time, parents of the kid should pay you for every lesson you can't have)

On the other hand, if she has stupi parents who believe in "no-stress" just smack that bithch and use the lid in some random moment....

#89 - On 11/11/2009 at 9:39am by Gorzki

Agree, refuse to carry on teaching the kid and tell the parents

#92 - On 11/11/2009 at 10:49am by Lisa89

But if this is the OP's main job she probably needs as many students as possible :S

#96 - On 11/11/2009 at 12:25pm by hiphopapotamuz

OMFG... thats horrible!!! i hope your fingers are fine, since you make your living (or at least part of it) of a piano lessons...
and i would sue her damn parents for letting her behave that way

#97 - On 11/11/2009 at 12:55pm by russita

10 years-old is old enough to get punched in the mouth.

#98 - On 11/11/2009 at 1:39pm by theodivine

If you retaliate, you would only get sued by the parents, even though she did it first. Your supposed to be more mature, regardless of what the previous comments say. Though iwould LOVE to slam the cover on her fingers, you just have to suck it up or call the parents.

#99 - On 11/11/2009 at 2:06pm by fmylifelooser

Ouch. Take the cash, explain to her parents that they will be paying any medical bills for broken fingers, and also inform them that if their daughter wishes to learn how to play the piano, they should find her a new teacher.

#106 - On 11/11/2009 at 10:36pm by radman

Damien's little sister?

#107 - On 11/12/2009 at 1:27am by meaganliz

Holy crap. Ask the parents for compensation, at least to cover the medical bills. Perhaps give the kid one more chance (who knows, if the parents discipline the kid she might not do it again) but otherwise say that kid isn't welcome at your piano ever again!

That said, I can't believe she did that. What have her parents been teaching her?? There's no way in the WORLD I would have done that to my piano teacher when I was a kid, a) because she was too nice but b) I would have been TERRIFIED of what my parents would do to me if I had.

#109 - On 11/12/2009 at 3:02am by LilaBear

oh my god, and you're a pianist too!

#110 - On 11/12/2009 at 11:08am by Sam_Cellist
