Man or woman?

Today, I saw my grandmother. All of my cousins and I went to say "hi" to her, one by one. When I got up to her and said, "Hi grandma!", she said in Chinese, "I don't remember this one." FML

I agree, your life sucks (18352) - you totally deserved it (1003)

maybe you just have a lot of cousins? I know some people who have like twenty

#1 - On 11/06/2009 at 6:17am by realxmuto

My grandmother in law cannot remember my name, and I'm only one of her four grandchildren, including the ones married into the family.

#14 - On 11/06/2009 at 7:40am by Ligerie

Number doesn't mean anything. I have 61 first cousins and my Nana knows all of our names.

Come on, think about it. Do you know twenty of your friends by name? Why would family be any different?

Don't be like that. Racist jokes are out.

#56 - On 11/06/2009 at 11:22pm by ilMOCHA

Awww, don't take offense to it. Her memory's just slipping.
It would've been worse if she suddenly remembered and said "Oh, yeah--- the mistake."

#3 - On 11/06/2009 at 6:18am by MermaidSongXOXO

Haha, good call, MS. Seriously, OP, grandmas' memory fades; don't take it personally.

哈哈她怎么能不认识你?

#5 - On 11/06/2009 at 6:27am by tiancai

Hey tiancai! Welcome on board! Say it in English please (nice typo btw).

#8 - On 11/06/2009 at 6:39am by Didi (FML Staff)

"Haha, how could she not know you?"

#9 - On 11/06/2009 at 6:49am by ElMundio87

btw why is it that Chinese is displayed in the comments without a problem, but in PM it shows up as question marks?

#13 - On 11/06/2009 at 7:36am by tiancai

Thank goodness for Google translator. As for how? She's old. It happens.

It must be sad when members of your own family don't recognise you. Ask anyone with relatives who have Alzheimers.

Looking at it the other way round, it must also be hard to realise that you don't recognise members of your family.

#19 - On 11/06/2009 at 8:42am by wellinever

Why does she need to say it in English?

Is it a big problem that people from all over the world type their native language?

#41 - On 11/06/2009 at 1:04pm by fawfulster

It is important that everyone on the site can understand each other. Since the site is in English, we wish all users to use English in their comments.

#6 - On 11/06/2009 at 6:27am by Tudulz

Not as much as if it was his parents. Grandparents are old and forgetful. Unless it was like his favorite Granny, then I see a problem

#34 - On 11/06/2009 at 10:12am by Sun_Kissed18

Maybe she said that about all of you. "I don't remember this one- Or this one- Is this one a boy or a girl!?!"

lol =)

Hey, you crazy old broad, willya remember my name long enough to get me into your will and then you can forget me again?

#17 - On 11/06/2009 at 8:12am by perdix

Sounds similar to when my great aunt was introducing us four kids... she was like, "This one's Matt, this one's Angelica, this one's Kyle..." then she points to me and says, "and that's... oh, whatever her name is." It definitely sucks.

Remind her of old chinese proverb..."Go to bed with itchy butt, wake up with shit on your fingers"

#38 - On 11/06/2009 at 12:05pm by Skull_300

Eh? Sounds like a simple slip of the mind to me. I think the more appropriate message is "FHL" (F her life), not "FYL."

There is no language called "Chinese".
There's Mandarin and Cantonese...

#29 - On 11/06/2009 at 9:47am by Ohnothingreally

The weird thing is they are an Italian family! No one knows why Grandma is speaking any of the languages of China.

#50 - On 11/06/2009 at 4:54pm by perdix

Actually, most linguists would consider Mandarin and Cantonese to be dialects of a Chinese language. While the English use of the word dialect doesn't convey the fact that the two spoken language systems are mutually intelligible, for social, linguistic-historical, and cultural reasons, there is indeed a spoken Chinese language. Furthermore, the spoken Chinese language features not only Mandarin and Cantonese but many other dialects.

#58 - On 11/06/2009 at 11:44pm by melqart

kudos to u ohnothingreally. so many ppl don't know there is a difference. the thing is OP should have specified if it was Cantonese or Mandarin if she's Chinese so a few alarm bells r ringing there. but all in all people start forgetting stuff when they get old. what's it called again?

#30 - On 11/06/2009 at 9:52am by misspeg

Yeah, I know the feeling. When my grandfather was dying (from cancer) we visited him at Christmas and he couldn't remember my sister or I (two of the only three grandchildren. He remembered the third, in jail for stealing from him) and to add salt to the wound, he said "she's prettier" and indicated to my sister. Try not to take it too seriously. They mean no harm, even if what they say really hurts

#31 - On 11/06/2009 at 9:58am by catastrophicsock

Everyone should pity me,
Though it's my Grandma's memory
That's fading way too rapidly.
I can't be worried for HER, you see,
Cause Im a giant cry baby.

Seriously, give the woman a break. I've watched a older and not so older people slip memory wise and worse, loose it completely. It's not an FML.

Did you say "Fuck You Old Lady" in English?

#36 - On 11/06/2009 at 11:23am by Skull_300

I'm Chinese and one of like 13 cousins, and this happened to me too! Well, it's definitely understandable, but I was a little hurt my grandma recognized my little brother and not me... Guess kids are cuter.

#37 - On 11/06/2009 at 11:53am by minakichan

Guess we know who got left out of the will eh ?

#39 - On 11/06/2009 at 12:27pm by CallMeHush

Alzheimers? Or she could just be joking, idk. ask her.

#40 - On 11/06/2009 at 12:31pm by BriniBrutal90

I would hate having to do that "lineup and say hi all one by one" thing. That'd be my FML right there, although maybe you're legitimately young.

It can't be personal, if it was... she would remember you specifically to hate you.
