Today, while watching The Many Adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh with my 5 year old, I realized why the kangaroo's name is Kanga, and why her son's name is Roo. Kanga-Roo. Get it? Yeah. I didn't until today. I'm 47. FML

#41: It isn't stupidity. It's more that they weren't paying attention. In fact they probably didn't watch it much until they had their 5 year old. I never watched it until I started babysitting a little girl who liked watching it, then my daughter watched it now and then.

Winnie-the-pooh, the original one was based off a bear at the Winnipeg zoo (I assume) whose name was also winnipeg. The original author's son (whose name was Christopher incidently) called the bear when he saw him 'Winnipoo' and so his father wrote the books baed on winni the pooh from that

#294 - On 07/04/2009 at 3:08pm by raincookie

#294, and the rest of you bashing the OP for being 47 with a 5 year old child. Shut up. It's none of your business to bash the fact shes having kids at 42, it doesn't matter if shes 42 or 24 when the child is born, what DOES matter is that she's being taken care of, loved, and is given what she needs in order to survive, and obviously if the OP was watching TV with her daughter, then shes being treated right. Not a lot of parents want to sit down and watch cartoons with their children.

#299 - On 07/05/2009 at 2:16am by MrsLeesha05

So why the hell is the fucking bear called "Pooh"?

#30 - On 07/02/2009 at 8:40pm by aback

the author of the book got the names and character from his kids stuffed animals. Pooh is what his son called his teddy bear when he was little

#58 - On 07/02/2009 at 9:10pm by WFMS

LOL they have one of those "heratige moments" on this... #58's got it

I'm not all that surprised that the OP is an american. It seems that many are either dumb as wood, or too busy with other things, to even notice stuff like this. And in my opinion, that shows to me, that they're not all that bright.

#46 - On 07/02/2009 at 8:58pm by lun8423

Oh fuck you, you can't judge an entire country's people. Believe me or not, we don't share a single mind.

#69 - On 07/02/2009 at 9:22pm by Mulada

You wana come over here and say that to our face lun8243

#70 - On 07/02/2009 at 9:22pm by swimchick2012

Sure, some Americans are complete morons (the OP and everyone else who didn't get Kanga and Roo) but not all of us are. Don't perpetuate the stereotype and people will stop living up to it.

#75 - On 07/02/2009 at 9:29pm by happylittleman

Ok, really? You did NOT just say that. You probably haven't even been to America, so how can you judge us? Sure, some of us can be a little dim, but that's true in EVERY culture. I live in America, and I happen to know way more smart Americans than dumb ones.

#88 - On 07/02/2009 at 9:40pm by koko_the_koala

hahahaha, good one

#94 - On 07/02/2009 at 9:46pm by nomnomsean

Think about this asshole, the VAST majority of the inventions that have changed the WORLD have come from America. How can you explain that if we are all so fucking stupid?

#95 - On 07/02/2009 at 9:46pm by under_achiver

LOL @ 95 the vast majority. fail.

#118 - On 07/02/2009 at 10:15pm by organisedchaos

Your a jackass. People are so quick to insult Americans, yet whenever your country needs any type of help, you all come crawling back to America because we have all the money and military power. So to lun8423, please stfu.

#139 - On 07/02/2009 at 11:15pm by fxdxhk90

Yes, all Americans are dumb, we've heard it before, we'll here it again. Get something new and original to insult us with please.

#146 - On 07/02/2009 at 11:28pm by emzmcgee

How would you like it if someone read your post and used it as a basis for saying all non-Americans are rude and judgmental? Sweeping generalizations make you sound like you don't know what you're talking about. Think before posting, please.

#154 - On 07/02/2009 at 11:44pm by wafflemonger

lol @ 75. so if we stop calling you dumb shits, you'll be smarter ? i don't quite see how that works. all the americans going into a rage here are soo precious.

#222 - On 07/03/2009 at 5:35am by PTERONOPHOBIA

First, it's American. It's a proper now. Second, your second sentence has unnecessary commas in it. It should read: "It seems that many are either dumb as wood or too busy with other things to even notice stuff like this". If you're going to insult us, please do so correctly. Besides, who cares if she didn't notice something as small as this? Yeah, she's probably busy with "other things" 'cause she has a fucking kid, dumbass, and doesn't have time to sit on her ass all day and watch TV.

To Pteronophobia, if you're also going to assume that all Americans are dumb, I'm going to assume that you have hairy armpits because you're French. Please shut up and go shave.

#277 - On 07/03/2009 at 8:43pm by sickinlove13

Not a FML but hey there, I'm sick of the stereotypes about Americans. What happened to cultural competence and recognizing that each person is an individual, who is not defined by a stereotypical bias?

Anyways, I didn't realize that their names put together spelled "Kanga-roo" intentionally. I thought that Kanga and Roo were cute short nicknames of the animal, kangaroo. Cool!
I am bright like a light bulb, thank you very much. Killer watt-smile :D o yeah...

#71 - On 07/02/2009 at 9:24pm by MissBunnyfufu

#72 - On 07/02/2009 at 9:25pm by sux_too_beh_mehz

#78 - On 07/02/2009 at 9:29pm by ugliy

People are fucking morons. I hate you, don't reproduce.

And, really? 47 with a 5 year old... I know people are living longer and shit, but after a certain age people need to stop having kids. It's just creepy.

#80 - On 07/02/2009 at 9:34pm by happylittleman

I never even knew the mother's name was Kanga. I probably didn't pay attention when I was little.

#81 - On 07/02/2009 at 9:34pm by FFPianoDude

#84 - On 07/02/2009 at 9:36pm by hiimmichelle

Ok, people on here can just be so mean sometimes! I don't get that! She obviously just thought it was cute that she didn't notice such an obvious thing after 47 years. She didn't literally mean she was fussing and crying over it. Even if you don't think it's a "true FML," why do you have to be so mean when you're telling her that? :P

#85 - On 07/02/2009 at 9:36pm by koko_the_koala

Lol i learn something new everyday. Lolz I never really thought about it that way xD

#86 - On 07/02/2009 at 9:37pm by DangerousBabee

#98 - On 07/02/2009 at 9:47pm by Knockyoudown

Theres nothing wrong with having a child at 42. Its kind late, but not terrible. Maybe he just didnt get married till then

#99 - On 07/02/2009 at 9:48pm by jdawg777

but it's a woman. Not a good idea to have kids after 40. Hopefully the kid is adopted.

#108 - On 07/02/2009 at 10:00pm by scorpioserpent

Slightly slow?? More like completely slow.

You had a baby at 42. That is fucking wrong.

#112 - On 07/02/2009 at 10:04pm by marjannnx

That is funny! It's also funny because I never realized that until now either, and I never would have known unless I read that, and I'm 18. Then again, I'm a guy and never paid much attention to that show. It is fun to laugh at oneself occasionally.

#114 - On 07/02/2009 at 10:12pm by PingPing

wow.... that's all i can really say. I kinda figured that out when I was 3 but yeah wow.

#117 - On 07/02/2009 at 10:13pm by kira822

It's alright, I never knew piglet was a baby pig. I thought piglet was just his name. I didn't realize it until last year, then again, I'm only 15.

#119 - On 07/02/2009 at 10:17pm by LiviLoox22

#126 - On 07/02/2009 at 10:41pm by 14159265

I just figured that out too, so no hard feelings. Then again .. I'm 13. Maybe it\s because last time you actualyl saw the show you were seven or something ? No worries.

#127 - On 07/02/2009 at 10:44pm by LadyCianne

#129 - On 07/02/2009 at 10:54pm by ohxberlin

why did you have a kid when you were so old?

#130 - On 07/02/2009 at 10:57pm by JillianDramatic

I'm just a little surprised that 47 year old's are reading FML's, posting them....and had children at 42. Very amazed.

#131 - On 07/02/2009 at 11:00pm by SuzyQ4u5

Oh thank god you told me that, I'm 20 and I didn't know that either...
To be fair though, I've hated Whinne the Pooh my entire life and barely ever watched it.

#132 - On 07/02/2009 at 11:00pm by Alisabeth

#143 - On 07/02/2009 at 11:24pm by _Skies

#147 - On 07/02/2009 at 11:28pm by jayjay777

I'm 16, but that happens to me ALL the time. The most obvious things escape me. And I'm not dumb either, so don't worry...you're just normal!

#148 - On 07/02/2009 at 11:29pm by dol567

don't worry...some idiots still don't know the word "another" is just the words "an other" put together...

#149 - On 07/02/2009 at 11:30pm by FlaminYawn

Maybe you didn't know because fucking winnie the pooh didn't exist back in your god forsaken times

#156 - On 07/02/2009 at 11:51pm by Shyman4ever

Actually, one of the first Winnie the Pooh stories was originally written in 1926, and Disney has been producing animations since 1966, when the OP would have been about 14. So what exactly did you mean, when you said Winnie the Pooh wasn't around in the OP's time? Even if she had been too old for the animations, she could have read the books.

#161 - On 07/03/2009 at 12:14am by your_face

The OP would've been around seven in 1966, not fourteen. That would make them born in 1952, making them 57, not 47...just sayin'.

#195 - On 07/03/2009 at 2:29am by AAAAHHHH12

Whoops i meant the OP would've been 4 in 1966, not 14..that would be 1976..like #192 said...

#199 - On 07/03/2009 at 2:42am by AAAAHHHH12

Hell, I didn't even know there was a kangaroo in winnie the pooh.
And great, my sentence rhymed.

#157 - On 07/02/2009 at 11:55pm by DeadMindHunter

#176 - On 07/03/2009 at 1:13am by drseuss

FML cause I never realized that til now either =/

#177 - On 07/03/2009 at 1:17am by stfuminjakid

Age is irrelevant. What is funny is the amount of time from when you started watching them to now.

#178 - On 07/03/2009 at 1:27am by ironmagma

Wow. You had a kid when you were 42?

#179 - On 07/03/2009 at 1:34am by DBJ740

I'm guessing you probably haven't figured out why the rabbit is named "Rabbit" yet either.....

#180 - On 07/03/2009 at 1:38am by _musical_addict_

Although I've read W-t-P in Russian, I could never figure out what "Trespassers W" meant, up till I turned 13 and thoroughly thought about it :)
But Kanga and Roo were always clear to me ^^

#181 - On 07/03/2009 at 1:47am by Lil_Ms_Trble

Come to think of it, why is Bugs Bunny's name "Bugs?" He's not a bug.

#182 - On 07/03/2009 at 1:48am by christopherlove

Because when the Bugs Bunny cartoons were first created, there was a gangster named Bugsy Malone. "Bugs" Bunny was meant to indicate that he was somewhat lawless.

#212 - On 07/03/2009 at 4:12am by aback

actually, every Warner Brothers cartoon documentary I've ever seen states that Bugs bunny was created by an animator named Ben "Bugs" Hardaway and when the character of a bunny was proposed many animators submitted their designs. The design labeled as " Bugs' bunny" was chosen and the name stuck. I've never heard any reference to Bugsy Malone.

#215 - On 07/03/2009 at 4:24am by ghettosnail

I got that one, but I didn't know that eeyore is the sound a donkey makes.

#190 - On 07/03/2009 at 2:22am by madasahatter

Wow, i figured that one out a long time ago! =D

#191 - On 07/03/2009 at 2:23am by HPluver

uh #129, the OP is 47, so he would've been 14 in 1976, not 1966. Don't correct someone and then proceed to fail at math all in the same breath...

#192 - On 07/03/2009 at 2:23am by FlaminYawn

Ive learned more in the replies then a week in school. FML sun-rise sun-set after-noon FML if he's normal I must be above avarage.

#193 - On 07/03/2009 at 2:25am by zobbyblob

I wouldn't consider you too stupid to get it, I'd say you're too smart to pay attention to that kind of thing.

#194 - On 07/03/2009 at 2:27am by Twin_Uzis

I feel sorry for your poor kid,
the kid is only 5 years old and the mother is already nearly 50.

peers are going to ask the kid if it's the grandmother that picks him/her up from school.

imagine when the kid is 15 and the mother is nearly 60.
ahaha , 15 - prime bullying years.

poor kid.

nice work having a kid so late (Y)

#205 - On 07/03/2009 at 2:54am by 00754chan

Who the hell cares how old they were when they had their daughter, the point is they are there for her and that she's healthy. I'm sick of seeing these posts talking about the person's and child's age. That part is not the point of the post. The point was that they didn't realize Kanga-Roo. *rolls eyes* FYL for caring so damn much about age.

#223 - On 07/03/2009 at 5:45am by MrsLeesha05

I just noticed it too. But I never really watched so I got a reason lol

#206 - On 07/03/2009 at 2:54am by MarissaGee

Fact until you mentioned it, i always thought the writers just weren't creative.

HOLY SHIT REALLY???!!??

#209 - On 07/03/2009 at 3:24am by xoxkarinexox

um winnie the pooh - his name is told in the stories - he had his arms stuck up above his head once and a fly kept landing on his nose so he would go "pooh" to swat it away and that's how he got his name - thats my memory from reading the book.....
as for kanga-roo, i spose if you're american you don't rly have kangaroos around, unlike here in australia where i live, everyone would get it straight away...

#210 - On 07/03/2009 at 3:31am by zorkat

ay yo #205 my mother is fuckn 51 and shes fuckn HOT. so bitch watch the fuck out what yur sayin. sorry yur mother prolly looks older than mine. iight stfu!

#211 - On 07/03/2009 at 3:31am by porkchop69

lmao don't feel bad. :D

#213 - On 07/03/2009 at 4:20am by Emma_91

ok, so to all the retards out there (I'm so sorry I don't mean it) here are the origins of the names as I was taught:

A. A. Milne, the author of the original book, created these characters based off his son Christopher Robin's toys and their imaginary adventures. His toy bear was named after I think an ostrich named Winnie and a different zoo animal named pooh.

Tigger is obviously from the word tiger and rather than pounce he bounced. You can thank childhood innocence for that.

Piglet is a boy (no more confusion) and he is named Piglet cause he's a small pig.

Rabbits a male rabbit

Eeyore I'm just gonna guess is derived from "ear"? like a donkey ear? Maybe it's more kid speak.

Kanga + Roo = Kangaroo haha I realized that at like age 5

Owl's an owl

I think that's it hope you've been enlightened!

#214 - On 07/03/2009 at 4:23am by deathbunny256

Eeyore is the noise that a donkey makes. or Hee-haw perhaps. get it?

someone said the vast majority of inventions that changed the world were American. It's things like that that make the rest of the world think you are stupid, dumbass.

Any idea how many world-changing inventions came from the middle-east that you are bombing the shit out of? A lot of fundamental mathematics, enabling most of the amazing stuff that happens today to happen. many other things as well.

americans might not all be dumb, but you certainly are #95

#218 - On 07/03/2009 at 5:07am by Vipros

WOAH!!! Haha! I didn't know that.
But I also didn't know that Dumbo got drunk and that is why he (or she) was hiccuping

haha...i didn't get it until now...I'm 17

#227 - On 07/03/2009 at 7:21am by 14rk

Who the hell cares how old she was when she had her child? All that matters is that the child has a good life, and is loved, and theres no way you could make a judgement about that based on this fml. So seriously, leave off.

#228 - On 07/03/2009 at 7:54am by Muse_89

umm i got this when i was like 5... people these days need to use their brains more...

I didn't get it, either. I'm 18. Hahaha.

#232 - On 07/03/2009 at 8:36am by lovell_says_hey

I hate FMLs that are like this! Because this is not something that really makes your life fucked, you were either a little slow about something or stupid about but complaining about it is just sad to me

For example, the one about the person who spent 3 hours washing the soap to get the picture on in off, who cares! it was how they chose to spend their time how is their life fucked?

#233 - On 07/03/2009 at 8:47am by xxdani

I remember the day when that dawned on me. I was around 12. It was the happiest day of my life. FML.

#235 - On 07/03/2009 at 9:42am by sarasarasarasara

Wow. I actually didn't realize that until I read this. Oy. That's pretty pathetic.

#237 - On 07/03/2009 at 10:24am by super_jew82

#246 - On 07/03/2009 at 12:24pm by Doorhandle57

Woahh. I only knew Roo's name xD I had nooo idea that his moms name was Kanga..... But yeah. I coulda figured that out if I watched Winnie-The-Pooh frequently. I almost never see pooh on TV anymore D; Hahah thats kinda sad, Im 16 and I want to watch Winnie-The-Pooh.....

#247 - On 07/03/2009 at 1:09pm by ISeeStarsBitchh

Same thing happened to me. I mean, I'm not your age, I'm younger, but still. I watched Winnie The Pooh all the time when I was a kid, and never got it until last year.

#250 - On 07/03/2009 at 1:42pm by jonsonvillebrat

I never knew that lol an im 16, i didn't even remember watching it though, whatever its just a kid's show, Kudos to you for having a kid when you were 42 though.

#251 - On 07/03/2009 at 2:00pm by Scotticus117

Haha! I just noticed that last week! I was in the car with my family and explained it to them and they were like, "Uhmmmm Yeah. It's a show for little kids."

#252 - On 07/03/2009 at 2:18pm by Oxym0r0n

Wow, I never realized that either!

#253 - On 07/03/2009 at 2:26pm by xpxp2002

I agree with poster 134. This isn't an FML...Seriously, some of these FMLs are pretty pathetic. Not every silly thing that happens to you is an FML. No one really cares if you've discovered the meaning of Kanga and Roo.

#255 - On 07/03/2009 at 2:28pm by Kris2476

Woah, dude don't feel stupid. I didn't even realize that until I saw this.

#256 - On 07/03/2009 at 2:34pm by yerrcoolx

:D thanks!

#257 - On 07/03/2009 at 2:39pm by TacoBob

#300 - On 07/05/2009 at 4:58pm by Beann

#301 - On 07/06/2009 at 3:46am by Tippsie

Who cares?!?!?!?!?!?!

#302 - On 07/06/2009 at 8:06am by RhymePrime
