Man or woman?

Today, I finally got the courage to tell my parents that I'm gay. My mom said "Yeah, we know." When I asked how they knew, my dad, without looking up from the tv, said, "We've been monitoring your Internet history." FML

If either parent knows what he's doing, the OP could have been tracked on the router instead of the PC, and he wouldn't have been able to get to the history to erase it.

#11 - On 06/29/2009 at 1:08pm by phatdaddy

Why not? Accessing a network from the inside is very easy. It's not like it's impossible for him to copy another device's name and MAC address on the network or encrypt his traffic. I suppose it wouldn't matter (doesn't now anyway) if the OP is computer illiterate.

#74 - On 06/29/2009 at 7:42pm by Impact009

well, google chrome incognito blocks that, right?

#81 - On 06/29/2009 at 8:32pm by AlexZB

the minute i read this fml i jsut knew there was someone who was gunna say "ydi for being gay"

#105 - On 06/30/2009 at 12:42am by lolzforfun228

no. incognito mode will not block that. It merely deletes records off the PC itself. It doesn't delete the internet traffic logs off the router.

#118 - On 06/30/2009 at 8:22am by phatdaddy

LOL

#2 - On 06/29/2009 at 10:49am by insomniac_855

hey atleast they didn't care.

#3 - On 06/29/2009 at 12:16pm by lakeylove

It seems like they don't care about HIM. They didn't even look up from the TV

#77 - On 06/29/2009 at 7:51pm by easylazy

Dude, it could be worse. Be glad they just accept you for who you are and don't make a big deal out of it.

#4 - On 06/29/2009 at 12:42pm by IreadFMLnaked

The FMl here is that they're totally invading his privacy. Look outside the box.

#104 - On 06/30/2009 at 12:23am by dyld921

Bingo.
YDI, and you're doing fine.

#111 - On 06/30/2009 at 2:40am by FoundManyLemons

Hear, hear!,#4! Everyone who is upset about "ruined" privacy is probably a disgruntled youth. If you can't take three seconds to delete your history, you might has well just leave your pr0n on the bed too.

#115 - On 06/30/2009 at 5:52am by Dmoira

At least they didn't flip out. How is it an FML? Your parents still love and care for you, if they had kicked you out or something, THEN, it would've been an FML. It's only a YDI cause you didn't clear your history.

#5 - On 06/29/2009 at 12:55pm by purupuru

I hate when my parents go through my stuff.

but yeah #4 is right

#6 - On 06/29/2009 at 12:57pm by meanie_monday

It's an FYL because his family is monitoring his history...at least for the OP. I say YDI for going to websites like those.

#72 - On 06/29/2009 at 7:34pm by curryndricegirll

I really hope you mean porn sites in general, not just gay ones.

#106 - On 06/30/2009 at 12:44am by lolzforfun228

Too much gay asian porn eh? Yeah..That'll do it.

#7 - On 06/29/2009 at 1:03pm by Diditf0rtheLULZ

Made me laugh.

People above me have a point. It might be embarrassing, but at least they didn't freak out and disown you or something.

#8 - On 06/29/2009 at 1:06pm by Twin_Uzis

YDI for not deleting your history!

#9 - On 06/29/2009 at 1:12pm by Dooozle

Major invasion of your privacy, sure. But at least they didn't freak out and were totally fine about it. Plus, they waited until you were ready to tell them rather than confront you when they figured it out through snooping...gotta give them credit for that!

#10 - On 06/29/2009 at 1:05pm by purple5

^^^ true that. I fail to see how this is an FML when your parents could have easily just disowned you and thrown you out on the street for it

#22 - On 06/29/2009 at 1:50pm by genius_man16

XD same here

#95 - On 06/29/2009 at 10:47pm by 1o1fyourlife

Yeah, it's not that bad. They didn't seem to really care, when a lot of parents would disown their kids for being gay. And, most parents monitor their kids' internet usage, that's what parents do. At least they didn't put on one of those programs to block porn, so they must ALSO be okay with you looking at porn! You're lucky, really!

#100 - On 06/29/2009 at 11:43pm by birds

I wonder how long it'll be before someone comments that the OP deserves it for being gay? Won't be long...

Er anyway, it's not exactly a problem. It made it A LOT easier for you to come out, didn't it? It's still an annoying breach of privacy. I really hate it when my parents are all nosey about my internet activity. Still, it worked out better for you!

Eh, you deserve it for being gay.

:p kidding kidding,

Apathy, can hurt as much as anger ...
Still ... praise yourself happy, some folks act out way worse.

On another note: good for you and best of luck!

#13 - On 06/29/2009 at 1:13pm by BenignScientists

Meee too. I just did that seconds ago. xD

#32 - On 06/29/2009 at 2:26pm by SiLveRStaRLIGHT

Why would apathy hurt? I doubt they would throw a coming out party. If something doesn't matter like someone's sexual orientation then apathy is the correct emotion. It's way better than having intolerant parents.

#35 - On 06/29/2009 at 2:45pm by jclark

Apathy SHOULD be the correct response by tolerant, accepting parents. If your kid came up to you and said "Mom, dad... I'm straight." your response would probably be something like... okay... so? It shouldn't really matter to parents whether their kid is straight or gay.

#101 - On 06/29/2009 at 11:45pm by birds

fuck, my parents must know (and they won't be cool with it)! even though I only looked at it once on my computer (thank god for the iPhone). I found out my brother was gay via his computer history.

L2deltehistory

#16 - On 06/29/2009 at 1:26pm by manman523

HAHAHA!!! sorry...but at least they are cool about it

#17 - On 06/29/2009 at 1:31pm by gelt

Believe me, when it comes to a coming out, things can be much worse than your parents just saying "Yeah, we know..."

So I really can't say FYL. I would actually say FML 'cause all parents aren't as cool as yours...

#18 - On 06/29/2009 at 1:39pm by Cheplu

That's how my parents found out I was a player!
Except they hacked my myspace and read my messages!
Yay for obnoxious parents.

#19 - On 06/29/2009 at 1:42pm by MeganH0LLYW00D

we like the dresses u wear everyday. congrats.

#20 - On 06/29/2009 at 1:47pm by bzlnv8

mmmmmm no. not fyl for being gay. lyl (love your life) for being gay.

#21 - On 06/29/2009 at 1:49pm by InkGothical

I think the implication was that his (Her? Gay is a gender-neutral term) parent's knew he/she was looking at porn. His/her coming out wasn't the focus, just the context.

#59 - On 06/29/2009 at 5:47pm by jakestlm

Well, you have to admit, it does seem like that made it easier.

#24 - On 06/29/2009 at 1:53pm by amidecour

Lol, that's my life. Similarly happened to me like 8 years ago when I was in high school. Thought I had cleaned my tracks but didn't think to clear the cookies back then. Be happy your parents were okay with it though and didn't confront you like mine did.

#83 - On 06/29/2009 at 8:51pm by dannydawriter

You should consider yourself lucky since they didn't make a big deal out of it.

#29 - On 06/29/2009 at 2:13pm by fegd

Your parents were both asses, but on the other hand, it saved you from an awkward moment.

#30 - On 06/29/2009 at 2:17pm by fxdxhk90

agreed ^^

#61 - On 06/29/2009 at 5:55pm by c3ns0r3dn4m3

I'm glad you decided to come out. :3
Congrats! I'm just glad there weren't any total douchebags in this one like there always tend to be (in the FML, not the comments. That'll never happen).

I always get paranoid when I read that though. Makes me wonder if my Ma monitors my net surfing.

#31 - On 06/29/2009 at 2:22pm by SiLveRStaRLIGHT

Go OP for being brave! :) But I agree with everyone. It's probably for the best that your parents didn't make a big deal out of it. Still, the invasion of privacy has got to be embarrassing. I think that's the FYL here. I'd probably die if my parents did something like that. I'm not gay, so I don't have that to worry about, but I still wouldn't like my parents poking around in my history. That's private! FYL.

#33 - On 06/29/2009 at 2:31pm by InterLinea

And this is what passwords have been invented for. I'm still gonna vote FYL, but you should've been smarter.

unless you're over 16 your parents monitoring web activity is them caring. over that can get a bit much and over 18 that shouldn't be done at all IMHO. either way not really a fml IMHO cause they're obviously accepting of you being gay.

#44 - On 06/29/2009 at 4:19pm by kaelendra

Well at least they didn't flip.
FYL though for the invasion of privacy.

#45 - On 06/29/2009 at 4:25pm by maddibrahh

Hahahaha, sorry, thats just so funny!

#46 - On 06/29/2009 at 4:40pm by Iwannabetreo

Overcast117 why don't you end your own life. You are obviously gay or you wouldn't be so defensive. Gay people go to hell. It's in the bible fyi so tell me how that heat is once you get there

#47 - On 06/29/2009 at 4:44pm by flor1dagator7

I don't believe in God, but if I did I would say that intolerant douchebags like yourself would be more likely to go to hell than people who are attracted to other members of their gender.

#50 - On 06/29/2009 at 5:06pm by HLJW1989

You act like I, at some point, said I wasn't. That in and of itself is the fatal flaw in your argument.

I won't have to tell you about it. A hateful son of a bitch like yourself will find out first hand. ;)

#52 - On 06/29/2009 at 5:14pm by Overcast117

idiot

#65 - On 06/29/2009 at 6:59pm by udumbidiot

The bible also says to love everyone, and not to judge them. I am a Christian, and some of the nicest people I know are gay. And on that note, I know gay people that go to church. Compared to those people, I think people like you are in more trouble.

#49 - On 06/29/2009 at 4:50pm by RigChan

I like how if you disagree with homosexuality you must be one of the following; intolerant, ignorant, full of hate, close minded, or "religious."

#53 - On 06/29/2009 at 5:19pm by Happyguy145

Well what else are you?

Intolerant: Well, if you actively disagree with something, you're intolerant of it, aren't you?
Ignorant: Well, it really depends on what your arguments against it are, but in more cases than not, yes.
Full of hate: If you're antagonizing a certain group of people, you're being hateful - or 'full of hate'.
Close Minded: I assume this means 'closed minded' - and if you 'disagree' with the way other people live their lives, that's not exactly being open minded.
'Religious': I don't understand why that's in quotes, but you have to admit that there are many people who use religion to justify baseless hate.

#54 - On 06/29/2009 at 5:23pm by Overcast117

that's because you are one of the following...

#55 - On 06/29/2009 at 5:27pm by angel323

.... What else is there?

#66 - On 06/29/2009 at 7:11pm by apastry

I like how if you disagree with the lifestyle choice of being black, you're a "racist."

#99 - On 06/29/2009 at 11:09pm by kevind23

to say that you disagree with one's homosexuality is the same as to disagree with one's skin color, hair color, facial structure, etc.

Wouldn't you call someone who "disagreed" with your skin color a racist?

#121 - On 06/30/2009 at 10:42am by delfinofrank

"the lifestyle choice of being black", bwahahahahahaha.
Great comment kevind23

#124 - On 06/30/2009 at 3:27pm by Qauzzix

YDI, this is why you delete your history.

#56 - On 06/29/2009 at 5:29pm by testing

FYL. Been there. Not pleasant.

#57 - On 06/29/2009 at 5:35pm by notmylife

Intolerant "unwilling to tolerate difference of opinion." Doesn't that go both ways?

Ignorant: According to you what arguments are ignorant?

Full of hate: There is a difference between disagreeing on an issue and antagonizing.

Close minded: So according to your argument I'm close minded for not agreeing with a lifestyle? I hope you don't support animal rights or being environmentally friendly or pretty much any social issue. Because then you too disagree with the way people live their lives and are a hypocrite. Everybody has their own opinion. Everybody has the right to their own opinion.

Religion: I only used that because that is an assumption of anyone that differs with society's view on this issue.

#58 - On 06/29/2009 at 5:40pm by Happyguy145

Intolerant: But you're the antagonist in this situation.
Ignorant: Arguments that overlook significant research contributing to the idea that homosexuality has to do with cell count of the hypothalamus in the brain
Full of hate: I'll give you that one. It doesn't really help your argument, anyway.
Closed-minded: Yes. That's exactly what I'm saying. I support the Earth myself, and sometimes wonder about people who are carelessly destructive towards it, but in this case there's a very clear 'right' and 'wrong'. Same goes for animal rights.
Religion: What? I'm just going to leave that one alone.

#68 - On 06/29/2009 at 7:23pm by Overcast117

I'm with happyguy. overcast you might want to see a therapist for this anger that you are unleashing. I don't hate gays as you say but I disagree with their choice, which doesn't make me ignorant. And so what if I'm religious and believe in GOD. I was just saying what I believe, like you have never disagreed with someone or said your beliefs

#60 - On 06/29/2009 at 5:49pm by flor1dagator7

About that...
It's not a choice. If you think it is, you're ignorant.

#73 - On 06/29/2009 at 7:36pm by Eldorko

LOL.

#84 - On 06/29/2009 at 9:07pm by Overcast117

#75 - On 06/29/2009 at 7:48pm by Futurefrog

hahaha.

on the bright side, there was no huge shock, and even if they aren't exhilarated they obviously aren't that disturbed by it either. so that's good :)

haha does it ever make me nervous about my own parents watching me, though. i really don't think they're that computer-savvy, but it's still a little worrisome.

#76 - On 06/29/2009 at 7:49pm by jmeg

unrelated : has anyone ever noticed that people who disapprove of homosexuality are more likely to write "close-minded" than "closed-minded"?

just an internet observation. :/

#78 - On 06/29/2009 at 7:54pm by jmeg

That's because it can be spelled both ways. Just so you know. Because it's not close like close the door, it's close like the opposite of far. As a way of saying that their "close-mind" does not see a broad range of views that they tolerate.

#91 - On 06/29/2009 at 10:05pm by heystephanie

one one hand, they were honerst about telling you that they were spying on you. on the other hand, they were spying on you and you can't trust them. it's good that you have the courage to talk about it. too bad they're jerks.

#79 - On 06/29/2009 at 7:55pm by Qup

Put a keylogger on your parents' computer, see how they like it.

#80 - On 06/29/2009 at 8:18pm by Mewtwo

Well, it could have gone a lot worse? XD But if I had been watching my son's history and found a few tons of gay porn, I probably would have at least let him know.

#85 - On 06/29/2009 at 9:43pm by solitare_lee

hahaha sorry dude...but the exact same thing happened to me, but my parents still think i'm straight...they're kind of stupid.

#87 - On 06/29/2009 at 9:49pm by zrhcrx

YDI because you didnt' delte your history. And this isn't much of an FMl because your parents understood you and didn't seem to care that much. My parents pretty much hate my guts and told me my boyfriends are never allowed over for anything and since im only 17 i can't see any boyfriend until i can move, my dad wont pay for my college because i could die from some std before im thirty so he claims it as a waste of money even though straight people can get stds too soo what the hell ever out, now that is an FML.

#89 - On 06/29/2009 at 9:59pm by lifeloathesme

You should tell them you realized that being gay was just a phase, and you've grown out of it. You can even pretend to "date" girls, so that they'll pay for your college. There's no reason for a young person to put themselves through that crap because they have bigoted parents. Go to school, make a show of being straight with some understanding girl, and then once you're done with college you can tell them you really are gay, and there's nothing they can do about it.

#102 - On 06/29/2009 at 11:59pm by birds

I really don't see how this is that big of an FML. Did your parents disown you or anything? Because unless they threw the computer at you afterwards in a fit of rage, it sounds like you had a pretty decent coming out experience. When I came out to my mom, I got burnt by an iron.

#90 - On 06/29/2009 at 10:02pm by heystephanie

Thats so true.
Hopefully; they still love him and everything.
But Im pretty sure the FML was being embarrassed by it; ya know?

#113: Yes, let's do. I'm sure it'll be great fun, and mighty pleasurable.

Atleast it doesn't seem to bother them :) Still FYL becuse they went through your internet history. I havn't had the courage to come out yet :s So good job with that, i can't imagine its easy

#119 - On 06/30/2009 at 9:20am by Marodi

internet options, clear history, etc, theres ways to delete it, but oh well, they know anyway so its not a big secret and never was lol. you're human, im sure they understand. Still sucks, but hey you should feel a bit better being completely open. It may be a bit embarrassing but if they don't act weird then thats a good sign, you can be open to them.

good job, at least you made up your mind to tell them. i hate it how my parents dont know

It's almost unbelievable to me how many people think this FML has something to do with his sexual orientation. All relationships are built on trust. Your relationship with your parents, partners, grocer or other. And they violated that trust by spying on you. Damn, I would get so angry. One of the things that I hold most dearly is my right to privacy. FYL indeed! But, at least they came clean about it and you can take countermeasures.

don't u no how to clear internet history? it's not that hard.

#126 - On 06/30/2009 at 9:45pm by kaleb0121

it's good u came out. ur parents shud love u no mattr wat and im sure they do. the people who left mean comments are incredibly rude. i am not gay but i know that it is totaly ok to be gay! i completely agree with #50 too. despite wat #47 thinks im sure u r a good person and u will NOT go to hell just for being gay!

well...it could've been a lot worse :]

#129 - On 07/01/2009 at 4:10am by classicalteen

why is this an fml?? at least your parents weren't angry/yelling at you! it could have been a lot worse....

#130 - On 07/01/2009 at 9:57am by avikakol

Yeah, but they could have attempted to show concern/asked OP if he wanted to talk about it. I think that coming out can be a bit of a big deal, even if everyone is really supportive.

#131 - On 07/01/2009 at 11:51am by derriduh

I'm sure you expected them to launch intoa bog story about how they loved you anyways, right? At least it was better than the alternative. After my sister came out, my parent disowned her. You should be glad they were indifferent and not judgemental.

#132 - On 07/01/2009 at 4:23pm by mikew85

You deserved it, cause, everyone deletes their history, right?

On the other hand, they were pretty accepting. That's nice to hear..

#133 - On 07/01/2009 at 4:37pm by Makinitez

ooh dude, that's tough. but hey you have to delete your internet history.
duh!

#134 - On 07/01/2009 at 9:08pm by egonzalez114

At least they didn't disown you?
Yay me! Looking at the bright side of every shitty situation :D

But to be completely serious, ouch.
:/
If that happened to me (which it won't, cuz I'm a girl... and I delete my internet history every day [not that there's anything 'interesting' I look at o_o] :D), I would probably die. On the inside.
Yeah......

at least they wern't upset
i think my parents monitor my internet use.. if they do, i will disown them, not that i do anything bad but its invading my privacy and theyr basically saying they dont trust me at all, so i cant trust them.
besides, i hate my dad enough already, he knows it, so why should he continue to make it worse.

#137 - On 07/02/2009 at 10:10am by Rareemo

Ouch, man. =( I would die if my parents saw my Yaoi collection! But hey, be happy that they aren't mad at you or anything! Some parents would throw you out on the street!

#138 - On 07/04/2009 at 6:03pm by starburst_boy

gay porn and yaoi kicks ass

#139 - On 07/04/2009 at 11:58pm by slicepaperwrist

At least they were cool about it?

#141 - On 07/29/2009 at 7:33am by Candyflosss

At least they didn't blow up about it like most people. but that sucks!!

#142 - On 09/01/2009 at 11:55am by BloodyPoisonKiss

Sure, it's embarassing that they were monitoring you, but at least they were somewhat comfortable with it. Look on the bright side, this isn't one of those nightmare stories where the father - or mother - starts beating the hell out of you, screaming the whole time how you're possessed by the devil.

Unless... what kind of stuff were you looking at? Are we talking the hardcore gangbangs with leather, whips, and chains, or just two guys kissing? They may have been stunned speechless, hence the calm.

#143 - On 10/01/2009 at 7:34pm by Kofu

It just means they had time to deal with any issues they might have with your sexuality before confronting you. And you're lucky your parents were so accepting that they didn't even confront you about it when they found out about it, they let you come out to them first

#144 - On 10/08/2009 at 4:10pm by Ranryu
