Wouldn't it be casual acquaintance zone? Strangers don't know each other at all so you can't exactly go back to that with someone.

I'm sorry you are disappointed. I quit because no one was reacting to my comments or PMing me. Back in the day, this place was so much more fun. I'm almost convinced they're letting this site die on purpose. They ran off a lot of the best commenters.

Hey Richard! On the contrary, we're trying to get it back on track after several years in the wilderness and neglect from previous owners. A new design is on its way, so stay tuned.

Really, when is this going to happen? Who are these new owners? I'd be happy to participate in a renaissance of FML. In the months before I quit, the site felt so sad and lonely. No one replying to my comments - either to condemn them or riff off of them, and no PMs except for occasional scammers. The few other comments were usually boring obvious advice, and hardly anyone looked for the humor in the stories. I hope you succeed.

We're actually going back to our roots (from the beginning of FML to pre-2015, thereabouts). New design, with a less "corporate", more user-friendly team. Just here to have fun!

That's good. Now all you have to do is get the fun people back (or entice new ones here). The amateur advice columnists are just too tedious. I have a laundry list of complaints -- mostly about the iOS app. Any timeframe on this switchover?

I'm curious about what you said to provoke that remark. What if OP is racist, ignorant, or pushy about their beliefs? What if they are extremely negative? I'd stop talking to that person too! I mean its rude to say that to someone but if they are being mean to others through their beliefs then they may need the wake up call.

I'm thinking it's more likely that op just talks a lot. He said he hasn't seen the friend in forever and that they had been talking for awhile, so it's probably more likely that he had a lot to catch up on than being a mean, pushy, racist, jerk. Sounds like op's "friend" is just a jerk and didn't really want to catch up as much as op did. And either way, you just don't say stuff like that to someone.
