All garage doors have a release for just such emergencies. It's the cord that hangs down from the motor. Pull it to disengage the linkage and open the door manually.
Not necessarily a cord like that, it depends on the type of garage door, but you are correct about there being a linkage to disconnect the motor
4 miles isn't even that far. If you're hungry enough you can do it! I have. It's not fun but worth it!
Health issues are a thing. Seriously, even if I were to somehow manage even a mile, I'd be stuck in bed for the next week healing, and that's putting aside all the chemical issues that it would flare up. Even without health issues, suddenly jumping up in activity can be dangerous... Putting THAT aside, considering the power was out, it was quite possibly storming, and that's a huge safety risk, especially if you aren't used to walking large distances.
