Today, I'm having dinner with my bf. We planned it weeks ago, and she made a big deal about being considerate and making something I can eat as well, since I'm vegan. She just told me that we're having a BBQ instead. It's in 3 hours, and I don't have time to go buy different food now. FML

I just don't understand how you didn't have time to buy you something else to eat in the three hours you had? How far do you live from a grocery store?

Hey, OP here! I didn't have time to shop, because I'm moving into a new apartment and I'm handing in my master's thesis in a week, which she knows. She also knows I suffer from stress right now, which is why I offered to bring my own food when we first planned the whole thing weeks ago, which she told me I didn't need to do. I don't mind her changing plans, but she could have told me sooner, so I didn't have to take the hours I'd marked for my master's thesis and go buy food instead. I first had to find recipes and a store that actually had the stuff I needed, and then cook it.

That's really inconsiderate, why did she change that and not think about you? Oh, also, cue the comments saying YDI for being a vegan FYI to people who are going to comment that, it's not a crime to be vegan, it's actually quite rare that a vegan will be supposedly "preachy" most of the time it's just a troll when you see one that is "preachy".

Actually when more people have experienced preachy vegans than have run across non-preachy vegans that makes it not such a rare occurence.

Unless the "preachy vegans" aren't actually vegans, and are in fact people trying to make vegans look like assholes. Which isn't uncommon, and #1's point. Yes, there are preachy vegans, but there are way more that would just like to have menu options at the event and only talk about what veganism is about when asked. Hell, people who are anti-gluten tend to be more 'preachy' about that than the average vegan.

I think part of the problem is that BBQ food takes a while for prep, especially vegan alternatives, since they can't/don't use a lot of the shortcuts to seasoning that non-vegan foods do. Honey, bones, pork chunks, etc. are all no-goes, and some vegans also try to avoid food products are exploit at-risk ecosystems. Being vegan is a real commitment, and it was really a dick move of the friend to suddenly go "not doing that theme anymore, come up with something else in the three hours, with enough for the dinner party." The only thing I can think of is pinto beans- and they'd have to find vegan canned beans, or frozen, unless they had a pressure cooker.

Oh okay, I see. Thank you. I'm not well educated in how much it actually takes to be a vegan. I'm not one myself. Sorry OP! That was a douchebag move of her to change it so suddenly.

I've got two fiends that are exclusively began, and one who was vegan but had to backtrack to non-vegan food due to illness. She's just now starting to work back into being a vegetarian. So I have a lot of experience with how troublesome it can be for them to find food products that they can use.

Oh. That's inconsiderate of her. As a vegan, I feel for you. Sorry she did that.

I understand why you're upset at being told last minute. I don't understand why, if you practice being vegan as a lifestyle, you don't know how to prepare veggies at a BBQ without a recipe. It seems like you are overstating the difficulty of grabbing and making food. Not that I think you should have to, this just seems more like an annoyance.

#9, I've never gone to a BBQ before as a vegan. Sure, if I had, being prepared would be easy. Plus, just because one is vegan dosn't mean one just eats salat, even though that is a common assumption.

Vegan sausages or just BBQ some mushrooms.

There are plenty of vegan BBQ options. Most BBQs have things like corn, potatoes, and all sorts of other veggies in addition to the meat being grilled.

True, but vegans can not live off potatoes and salat alone.

Like the above said, potatoes and salad alone aren't enough. Vegans need a protein source like any other human, and unless someone just so happened to bring vegan (not vegetarian) meat alternatives, or vegan baked beans, OP would probably get stuck with a meal consisting solely of carbs- and thus likely be hungry again in a few hours.
