Today, for Mother's Day, I surprised my Mother with the news I that I'll be visiting in June. The last time we got to visit was 4 years ago, we live 4000 miles apart and it's a very expensive trip. She said, "No, come next June, I want to lose some more weight before seeing you." FML

  • It sounds like she's insecure about herself, and wants you to be proud of her. Would it help if you explain to her that you love her no matter what, and that, even though you support any efforts she's making to be healthier, you really don't care how she looks? Not seeing your child for 4 years is kind of a big deal, I can understand she wants to be at her best for you.

  • I'm sorry Op, that sucks.

Still, I had a cousin tell me she was on a flight out to see me during a week I had work and didn't have the ability to entertain someone. I also had a house full of people, no vacation time, and no extra money. So I told her I couldn't host her. She got upset and still tried to come. I told her to get a hotel and figure out her own... Anyways the moral of this story is ask when a good time is before you make concrete plans with someone.
