Today, I was signing with my deaf brother at a local McDonald's. We were having a laugh about a game we played last night when this morbidly obese woman waddled over to us. She was utterly convinced we were "talking shit" about her and made a scene about our "hand gestures." Seriously? FML

That's when you give her the finger. But in all seriousness, you could try and explain to her that you were playing a game. She's obviously very insecure about her wait.

Some people are just really insecure about themselves. I know if I'm out running errands looking disheveled (because yoga pants are for running errands, right?) with my back brace on and a gaggle of women start laughing at something I'll anxiously think they're laughing at me.

I honestly thought you were making a pun about a larger person getting angry over the wait for her food. hahaha

Not to be a dick but if she's insecure about her weight why is she at a McDonald's?

And then when she gets mad at being flipped off, you explain it means cactus in sign language haha.

Tell her is Sign Language to **** off (hopefully if your brother doesn't know the sign if he's younger) or something similar.

#51, I think flipping the bird is universal sign language for **** off and people of all ages are aware of it.

#53, I figured it'd be more amusing if you did it in sign language so the lady was oblivious to what you were signing. I know some sign language and I believe its more fun to sign it than to gesture it. I would hope a five year old doesn't know the bird at that age, but with this generation, who knows. I didn't learn it till I was 12.

@Mauskau If it's once every few months, then it's pretty good. I haven't had McDonald's in 4 years and I tried it 2 weeks ago. Not that bad.

Some people are just self-obsessed OP, or looking to cause a scene. I hope you and your brother were able to continue with your day after this incident and she didn't spoil it for you.

She was obviously morbidly too self obesessed to notice your brother was deaf. Next time when someone does that OP? Just walk away laughing. That'll set them off. But if your a nice person. Well. Do nice person things.

Not to be rude, but how can you notice if someone is deaf? You can't exactly see it.

You can if they're communicating using sign language, and you know, not talking out loud. That's a bit of a hint.

She was obviously too self-absorbed to realize it was about anything but herself. Just shake it off OP and keep laughing and having fun with your brother.

@5 Maybe she doesn't know what sign language is. She could be self-absorbed and dumb.

Yeah a lot are insecure, but you know what most insecure people do? They bottle it and walk away. This woman was not acting out of a insecurity, she was looking for a fight.

There comes a point in someone's life, insecure or not, where they've had enough and are no loner afraid to confront someone for a perceived slight. How does the saying go? You can only kick a dog so many times before it turns vicious.

I know some relevant sign language for such a situation...

Should of apologized and ask if you could buy her a diet coke

I have to say it; it's should have, not should of.

I have to say it; it's shut up, not shutup.

Unless she only saw one or two signs, there's really no reason to think that sign language is just a few hand gestures aiding a normal situation.
