At the same breath though, look at her ex's position. He most likely broke up with her (for whatever reason) and it wasn't working out. Then, it says "xxx is typing..." for an hour, he must have known what was coming. After a million years of reading about how she still likes him, what can you say to that if you don't like her back? First, you spent over an hour writing a message on live chat? That's weird in the first place!
Second, why were you talking to an ex at all? There were probably good reasons that you and he broke up.
Third, his response is lame and immature sounding, but you also probably completely took him by surprise and he had no idea what to do with what you told him. If he was just sitting around, drumming his fingers and wondering where you went for that hour when you were writing the message, and then he suddenly got this enormous declaration dumped through the screen, he was probably overwhelmed and not ready to process it instantly. This is why the live forum was a terrible place for this. Men tend to be a bit less emotionally adept in the first place and often need space/time to sort things out and come up with their own conclusions. You didn't give him that time. I know you were probably hoping that he had a confession of his own just waiting to burst out of him, but that was pretty unlikely in any event. I'm guessing he ended it, since why would you, if you still had feelings for him. In that case, the reasons why he ended it are probably still valid. In that case, you probably really screwed up any chance of staying friends with a declaration like that.
So, while I'm sorry (although it seems to me that you should just find someone better), you also kind of really asked for that one, IMO.
People say the guy is a douchebag, but tbh - if you're gna tell something that personal you don't do it on instant messengers.

Wait Wait Wait- on AIM, doesn't it not let you send a message over a certain length? I used to write some messages that took me maybe 5 minutes, and they were over the character limit. I haven't gone on in a while, so maybe they changed it- but even if they doubled the amount you can send, I think the reason he dumped you is because you are so slow in the head that it takes you an hour to type a few characters
She could have typed it up in word and did the whole copy-paste business... I have done that before when telling someone this intense dream I had... Just saying it's possible.

There are things AIM is meant for. This was in no way it. If you must do it remotely, in text, and cannot do it in person or on the phone use freaking email. If it took an hour to write, it was not appropriate for AIM. Besides the OSCAR protocol (what AIM uses) has a max length -- and it is not all that long. I can easily fill the max character limit typing at a regular speed for only a handful of minutes.

Although it's horrible to put your feelings out there only to have them pretty much completely dismissed, I do agree with the others though, AIM is not the place for saying those kinds of things, same as MSN, Yahoo messenger, etc. OP's ex was probably sitting there, trying to comprehend what was going on and the only thing they can think of was what they said. dude I like this guy. that's freaking funny ok. besides why would you write a "long" message on AIM? that's just dumb. besides there is a limit to how much you can write on there so it couldn't be to long. if you ask me it's kind of dumb to talk on IM anyway. texting is cooler then that...and texting how you feel about someone is really freaking stupid. I don't understand why everyone is saying that the OP is so teenager-like and immature just because she still has feelings for her ex and expressed them online. He might have feelings for her to, and if they never discussed it they could miss out on the oppurtunity to be together. Plus, has anyone considered that her ex might live far away, and she cant talk to him in person? Plus, maybe she is just TOO SHY to.
