Today after not talking to my dad for 3 years due to having a knife put in my face and my life threatened, I find out he has two months left to live. FML

Honestly, you shouldn't feel guilty. You probably only feel this way because he's family you haven't seen in a while and now he doesn't have much time left. However, this guy threatened your life, he could have killed you, cutting him off was not only completely reasonable, but I'd be worried if you didn't end your relationship with him after that. In my view, this man is not really your father, just another asshole, blood doesn't make family, the people who treat you the way you deserve is what makes them family. If it were me, I still wouldn't give him a chance at this point, he made his bed when he threatened my life, his life may be ending, but that does not get sympathy for attempting to end mine. However, you sound upset about the situation, so if you want to go see him, do it, just be careful, and if he gets abusive again, leave and never go back.

I guess thats a good thing, no more knives pointed at you.

I think you should try and be with him. It might not make him feel better but I'm sure it would help you.

Most people will understand if you don't see him before he dies after the knife incident. If you have forgiven him, then be there for him. Whatever happens don't feel bad, it wasn't your fault.

is it a brain tumor in an area that affects behavior because thats the only scenario i could only care i mean seriously i know it's your father but he was ready to kill you

If you can make peace with him while you still have time then you'll probably feel better for it in the long run. That said, I imagine that won't be easy to do. Hope it works out.

I person who dies should be remembered by the way they lived and not sugar coated. If he was an asshole then he deserves to be remembered as one, don't feel guilty for not spending time with a father like that.
