Somehow I've grown to dislike that phrase, as it's too often used as an excuse for selfishness. I hope for OP that he tried to support her, and not just "sat there awkwardly until his ride home arrived"

Also if he was over for the first time, they probably hadn't been together for long at all. In that case, you can't blame him for feeling awkward and not knowing what to do. And OP did say he sat beside her, which was very nice of him when he could have waited elsewhere.
