He might not survive the actual surgery (I'm not sure how real it is, the chances of death are probably really low), but he's not actually going into surgery. He's fasting for the surgery. Which means she has many many hours with him before he actually goes into surgery
no 409 had it right that moron was an ass for saying that plus the poor guy more than likely had to go to the hospital shortly after lunch to fast there so yeah no hours of quality time and besides even if he didn't go to the hospital she should drop an unimportant haircut to be with her husband, my mother had to have a minor procedure done on her arm my father cancelled his one week business trip to stay with her.

The writer sounds a bit overdramatic. Maybe your wife didn't want to watch you mope for an entire lunch? On the one hand, she might seem insensitive, but on the other, no person should have to put up with another's self-pity, even if they're getting surgery (ALL surgeries have a % chance of killing the patient...). Not saying it's true either way, but maybe she just wants to force you to be more cheerful about it by not giving you a chance to wallow in misery? Just chin up and live your life as you do every day in the days leading up to the surgery. If you die, at least you can say you spent the last days of your life enjoying yourself, instead of worrying about how bad it's going to suck when you die. Plus, a healthy attitude increases your chances of surviving the surgery.

I know you're hurt but she is probably not dealing well with the thought of losing you and won't let herself admit that it's a possibility, and going to lunch to commence your fasting for a major surgery might just be too morbid for her. Just make sure you tell her you love her before the surgery.

It doesn't only sound incredibly insensitive, it's like she doesn't care at all about him. She should be there for him, even if only to tell him to stop with his self-pity. It may not be the best time to teach him a lesson.
I could understand how she wouldn't want to face what would possibly be their last meal together, though.
Really, it's hard to tell what was the wife thinking, and how the husband was acting without context. And, husband, if you think your wife would really think that the hairut is more important, there's a problem. If you think there's a deeper reason, talk to her!

Therefore, he wanted to have a nice meal with her early in the day, so he wouldn't have to worry about eating too late.

To people who say "leave the bitch," it's not as simple as a douchebag boyfriend or girlfriend who you can 'just walk out on.' When you're married, the two of you are bound by a lot. Divorce is expensive. And if you've been with someone a long time it's obviously because you love them. you know, maybe shes having issues with her anxiety over it. I told my mom that i would NOT be seeing her in the hospital, because i am very afraid of them, and seeing her like that was just too hard. We talked about it, and she understood. Seems mortal fears of doctors run in the family. I did make sure that she had plenty of people to keep her busy, and i called her.
I dont know, maybe its just an excuse, but she could have been freaking out. i would just talk to her about it, especially since you both probably had the same fear.

Considering you are right about your chances of not surviving, have you ever thought that the one who leaves has the easy. Yes leaving is difficult, but that's it. At least we do not know what happens after death so can not argue on that. But if she really loves you then her whole world is tearing apart right now.
Don't get me wrong. You must be is terrible pain. But if she loves you (which I should assume from the way your wanted to spend time with her in the first place) she is more pain now. She has to live without you. I think that is why she wants to avoid you... to hide her own tears.

Well did you invite her to your lunch? Or did you just plan to have her not do anything that day just because it was your last lunch meal? Maybe she had the hair appointment scheduled beforehand. I doubt she was like, "Ew, last meal with YOU? I'm going to go get my haircut instead." She probably didn't realize how important this last lunch was to you. If you're so upset, then just have a romantic dinner anyway. That sounds better than a "romantic lunch" with your wife. Are you going to have romantic cheese sandwiches in the candle light? (Just joking.) Plus she'll probably be more than willing to go through with the romantic dinner option.
