Today, I took my mother grocery shopping. From the opposite end of the snack aisle, she yelled, "They don't have my darkies! Ya know how I like my darkies!” She was talking about dark pretzels. I don’t think the appalled black couple next to me knew that. FML

Today, I was out with my niece at the store. Where we live there aren't many people of color, so it's surprising when you do see someone like that. Anyway, we were shopping and my niece just hysterically screamed, "IT'S A CHOCOLATE MAN EATING CHOCOLATE!" while pointing at a black man eating chocolate. FML

Today, at work, a woman came up to the snack bar and ordered a pretzel with no salt. When I served her the food, she angrily complained about it having no salt, followed by her throwing the whole thing in my face. FML

Today, my coworker and I were swamped with coffee orders. I told him I would "take care of the blacks", and a customer who only heard that sentence screamed at me for several minutes about racism. FML

Today, while at the local supermarket, I spotted an attractive woman packing food into a shelf. Trying to be flirty, I asked where I could find the cream cheese. Apparently, it was on the shelf right behind me. I heard her mutter "idiot" under her breath. FML

Today, while at a restaurant, my three year old daughter pointed at an African-American girl and yelled out “She’s ugly because she’s black!” Me and my wife got dirty looks for the entire rest of our meal. We have no idea where she learned that. FML

Today, while waiting in line with my 4-year-old son, I had to awkwardly apologize to an African-American gentleman and explain to my son that the man was not made out of chocolate. FML

Today, I was working when an older lady came up to buy a coffee. Her son cried for a cup of whipped cream to snack on. She shook her head, silently telling me to say no. I said we were out. The mother took her drink and said, "I'm sorry honey, but the mean man said you couldn't have any." FML

Reminds me of a story my dad told us of when he was a kid. He and his siblings all had standardized tests, and wanting to wish them good grades as they got on the bus, my grandma yelled, "Good luck with your testies!" to them. Testies. Testes. Yeah my dad got picked on a bit for that lol.

Very easily. "Darkies" is a derogatory term for black people, especially those with a darker complexion.

Yeah, but what is it supposed to mean in this context then if the mother really should have meant the derogatory term? I really think that it sounds relatively innocent calling some small dark chocolate stuff in the snack isle darkies while it still shouldn't be okay to use this term regarding actual people.

Wow! That could have been nipped in the bud a long ago. Someone around her could have clued her in that her term would be considered as a racial slur. I've never heard chocolate pretzels called dark much less darkies a day in my life. Makes me wonder what she calls her other snacks.
