Today, I learned that my dad and stepmom, who live over 3 hours away, visited a flea market with their friends. That flea market is less than 15 minutes from my house. I've been trying to get them to visit me for a trip there for 2.5 years. I found out from my mom tonight. FML

OP here! My first published FML! Yay! I've always had a rocky relationship with my dad and stepmom... So while this was the tip of the iceberg that made me finally decide to be done with them, it's been a long time coming. And how my mom knew, was because they told my sister where they were - and not to tell me. So she told my mom and told HER they said not to tell me because she thought I deserved to know. My mom tells me pretty much everything, and my sister knows this. But really? Who visits a place they KNOW is less than 15 minutes from the kid they only see a couple times a year because of the distance and doesn't at least say "Hey, we're in the neighborhood, let's get dinner!" My husband and I have met these friends before, and none of us would've minded. And, like I said, this is just the tip of a very large iceberg. So yeah, I've decided if they want a "Christmas only" relationship with me, that's what they're gonna get. Cuz I'm done.

If your parents can't be bothered to visit you in 2.5 years, you have some pretty rotten parents. See how they like it when you don't visit them.

I wouldn’t even give them Christmas

Well, I don't want to punish my grandma and siblings because my dad's an ass. I still like them!

Good choice. You can’t make family actually act like family, but you can choose not to have toxic people in your life. Sounds like your mum and sister have your back.

Was it the Montgomery Flea Market? It's just like a mini mall!

Go and have a cup of coffee with their neighbour and tell them about it the next day.

Sounds exactly like my dad. He and his new wife moved from another state to 45 minutes away, and I haven’t seen him once. And he’s even eaten at restaurants right down the road from me and never said a word.

I have visited EVERY member of my immediate family, at least once every 5 years (we all live in different states). Not one single member of my family has ever come to visit me in 32 years.

Yeah, I've driven to visit them pretty much every time I've seen them in the past 4 years since I moved 3 hours away. They've been down to visit me twice in that time - once when I lived in my apartment 4 years ago, and once shortly after I bought my house. What especially made this hurt is not even 2 months ago, my husband and I drove 6 hours round trip on a Sunday, starting when my husband got off work, to be there for my dad's 50th birthday party. But he comes within 15 minutes of me and it's all "don't tell *me* we were there"...

They don’t even deserve you at Christmas time. Sorry OP
