What's wrong with it? That's called creativity!

Could be worse - could be a chef asked to prepare some shrimp in the shape of a lamp.

make a fancy upside down wine glass with little shrimps dangling from the rim. or use the spiral shape and colors as inspiration. or use the shell texture and play around with the shade's form. the possibilities are endless.

Well...that sounds awesome. I imagine it must be technically difficult to design to so there probably is some learning opportunity there too

That's funny, I was working with architecture students a few days ago and one of them had created a lamp made of recycled metal parts that looked like it had tendrils, kinda squiddy! Alvar Aalto designed furniture too, it's not completely unusual for an architect!
