Why are the cats the problem? My ex had 3 or 4 and he was a guy, pets don't decide if you keep a significant other or not, and if they do, that person obviously doesn't respect your ideas or opinions (unless they have a health issue, that's different)

On another note, why would anybody want to own 4 cats? Maybe it's just me, but I think 1 animal would be enough, or maybe 2 for companionship reasons when OP is not there. Maybe it's because I'm a city kind of guy, but I find them unhygienic and my schedule is erratic so I wouldn't be able to be around all the time to look after it properly. Also, it places impracticalties if you want to go abroad etc, which I do as most of my family (and freinds) is in the UK and US.

55 how do cats clean themselves? if you are referring to them licking themselves, how is that hygienic? If a person were to lick themselves allover instead of shower would you feel the same way? just curious.

@60 Cats have special fibers on their tongues, so when they lick themselves, they ARE cleaning themselves. It's not the same as a human licking themselves....I feel like that's obvious.

88, because she was put on the spot, I'd guess. The way the cashier worded the question made it sound like anyone who was dropping the money on VS couldn't possibly be enough of a loser to not have a boyfriend, so OP may have been (sub)consciously avoiding her disapproval. I know I've made up stuff about throwing a huge party to counteract raised eyebrows when I buy in bulk at the liquor store, when really, I just happen to be stocking up on a good seasonal ale that only gets sold once a year.

Finding a boyfriend should not be a new years resolution! :/ you should be paitient.

@104 I don't see why wanting to get into a relationship is a bad idea. You have to make other life choices to be open for relationships, like getting out to more places, fixing bad habits that prevent you from dating, and maybe going to the gym if you aren't happy with the way you look. If someone wants to find love in the next year, there is nothing wrong with that. Being patient doesn't always get the results you want.

Probably because it could have been awkward for OP to say 'um, no, I'm just buying underwear' when the cashier is trying to make conversation.

You definitely don't need to be in a relationship to be happy, but when a stranger asks you something like this they usually don't care about the response. It's just something to say to be polite. I'm sure the cashier didn't want to hear about OP and her cats. The cashier just wanted a cute smile, and a yes, and that's what OP gave her.

I agree. It's not shameful to be single and certainly not to have cats. I'm happily single and my family has five cats. I think the issue here is that the cashier made an assumption and OP lied as a result.

Reminds of the fml where the girl lied to the cashier that she bought a big meal for her and her boyfriend. When in reality it was all her. If you are looking for a mate stop lying to everyone that you're taken!

Just because she's single doesn't mean she's looking for a boyfriend. She could be single by choice.

Maybe she was too embarrassed to tell the cashier she was just buying it for herself or maybe she didn't want the cashier to show any unnecessary pity.
