Today, my dad decided that the best way to alleviate my crippling depression is to talk to me in a baby voice. FML

At least he is trying to help. There are far too many parents out there who don't care at all.

Everyone tries to help out in different ways, some people don't know how to deal with certain situations and maybe that's just his attempt at trying to help. Just let him know that's not the way to do it and I'm sure he'll understand and stop.

it might be mental /clinical.... or situational( like something recently happened in your life). the only one who can change your life for the better is you op. if it's clinical then medication is out there . if it's situational then figure out what triggered the depression. free counseling is probably offered at a church or school. no one can fix you but you. I had to learn that the hard way.

Maybe he's just trying to be goofy to make you smile.

it might not be tactful, but it could be true..

Yep, sometimes my family just try to make me laugh. I think watching your child be ill and unable to do anything to help makes people desperate. And depression is very hard to help!

Right. Some people help differently.

Try speaking to him in the same voice to make him realize it's something you don't like and he'll stop. I understand depression and it really sucks. So hope you rise emotionally, OP. Good luck.

Or if OP hasn't tried this already she can just talk to her dad instead.

I don't really see how talking in a baby voice would help at all. Honestly it's rather belittling

Hey, if the father has never encountered this before what do expect? Maybe it's just me but the father did what he thought was best by trying to comfort OP.

Who's a sad little girl? Cootchy cootchy coo

Hey. He is just probably trying to help even if he is misguided. And otherwise, it gets better, I promise. Get some actual professional help if it continues like is,

He's a paternal figure, but that doesn't mean he has to be patronizing

A lot of people simply have no idea how to go about communicating with someone who is depressed. I'm sure he cares a lot but has no idea how to show it. I hope you find whatever help you need whether it be therapy or medicine. Best of luck OP!
