Hallo iedereen! As promised, we're continuing our 'Artists from the Netherlands' month, and today we're welcoming someone very special. Her illustrations are as dainty as inspiring. She'd like to create wallpapers to embellish anyone's home and frankly, I'd love to have a room decorated by her. Her imagination is the reason I fell in love with her and I'm proud to introduce her to you today. Ladies, gentlemen, Sue Sylvester, please welcome...
-Hello everyone, my name isChantal van Mierlo. Also, my nickname is Skandaloe !
-Why did you choose this nickname?
-A friend of mine used to call me Skandaloes, so I got it as a present by accident.
-How old are you?
-I'm 28 years old.
-Where do you live?
-Antwerp, Belgium but I am from Zwolle, Overijssel, the Netherlands. So I am 100% Dutch!
-What's your job?
-Besides illustrating I work part-time in a magazine store and besides that I'm doing evening education in communication. I hope in this way I'll also be capable to increase my conceptual skills.
-What's your journey ? Thinking and getting there. But where is not completely clear jet. So I'll surprise myself. Also my journey is to find out what my capacities are. What am I capable of with illustrating? And my biggest dream is to design wallpaper and other products people can use in their homes.
-What are your inspirations?
-My inspirations are patterns, jokes and illustrations from the '60s and '70s. This includes the cool retro patterns and stuff. For example Alain Gree, an awesome illustrator.
-Do you read webcomics? If so, which ones?
-Not really, but if someone really wants me too, I will.
-Tell me more about your creations. -I like working with a theme or subject given by a client or whatever. I create it because of people can see it of course. It is an easy way to show my work. I like enjoying people with my images. At the school of arts theory were looking for "deeper" emotional stuff, but I have to admit that that is not really what I am looking for. I just want people to be happy.
-How do you work?
-Normally I start sketching in my sketchbook. And thereafter I'll scan it and work on it on the computer, flipping out on patterns, colors and stuff. I try to make happy cozy things. Light subjects and "funny", perhaps in the future things will become some heavier, I have to admit, I cannot predict the future. I will see which path I will walk down.
-Why did you choose this FML story?
-I got it from you, Alice, and I liked it :)
If you want to be the next published artist, send an email to alice [at] fmylife.com including a link to your website/blog/DeviantArt. But DON'T send your illustration right away! You need first to get in touch with me, and I'll tell you what you have to do!
Everybody's talking about Ebola at the moment. I have trouble keeping up with the latest trends. I'm going to wait until Christmas and see what special offers turn up in the shops, under funky new names…
