The FML truth

Good morning earth. I hope you had a good week and that you didn't lose any important files due to an unsteady computer, that subsequently led you to depression and hot, screaming tears. Because that was the case for me. But thanks to this wonderful job that allows me to search the internet to find the most talented and funny webcomic artists, I discovered Ry, that you maybe already know thanks to his amazing Deviant Art gallery. And It's a small world, Ry is a friend of Willow-san, our very first published artist! Now let's start the interview, to get a chance to Ry.

-What is your name, surname and nickname?
-The long version of my name is Ryan "Ry-Spirit" Shiu, but people know me as simply Ry. Over time there has been many puns played on my name by fans, like Ryce Ball, Ryce Cake, Sweet and Sour Pork with Ryce,... TOO MANY PUNS! But I enjoyed them ^^ . I thought Ryan was two letters too long so I had to cut it down to Ry, so that it is just Ryght.

-How old are you?
-I am 26 at the moment, this number tends to freak people out because I've been told I look like I am 20. Hmmm well there IS kind of an explanation for this.... I am Asian.

-Where do you live?
-I was born in Hong Kong, and moved to Sydney Australia when I was 8. But I travel around Australia to different states a lot to attend conventions.

-What's your job?
-I literally just draw at home, that's my job now. Initially I wanted to pursue a career in Graphic Design until I realised I ain't good at that and my strength falls more into illustration. I then wanted to get into a big Design studio or an Animation work place where I can showcase my art style and be myself while also helping a company grow, but I couldn't find a job that allowed me to do that. Then as my popularity started to grow, I started getting more and more freelance jobs till I reached a point when I'm like 'You know what? I think I will just do this for a living.'

-You're living a dream that thousands of people share! What's your journey ?
-My journey is to one day have my own comic. A comic that will be read and appreciated by millions, it will then be made into an anime and even a live action film starring Lee Jun Ki and Amandla Stenberg. Because that way I will be able to get on Wikipedia. So yes my goal in life is to get on Wikipedia. I'm not even joking XD.

-What are your inspirations?
-Oh too many! I love a lot of artists from popular ones such as Akira Toriyama, Miyazaki, Satoshi Kon, Shinji Kimura, Street Fighter artist Bengus, Pokemon artist Ken Sugimori. As well as artists on Deviantart such as Cuson, Chamba, Chan-cake, Willow-San, tomiokajiro, Nasuo etc etc. I like to look at their art and pick up their styles and then incorporate them into my own. I also like to appreciate little details in drawings, like Shinji Kimura's drawing of cities, he would add so much details, you just look at the artworks and can't take your eyes off it because there's so much to see in that one picture. So yeah I like to do that too with my artworks, so people can find hidden treasures in there.

-Do you read webcomics? If so, which ones?
-I don't really read webcomics, call me old fashion but I prefer to have a book at hand. Maybe because I like to feel the texture of the paper or the fact that I like to collect comics/art books. But I do read short webcomics or memes when I am bored, like stuff on Tumblr or 9gag.

-Tell us more about your websites.
-My website is only a portal to a few other art sites I'm on and updates more regularly, such as my Deviantart or my Facebook fan page or my Tumblr or my Youtube . They are all connected to one another so people from all different websites can see my work.

-Are you selling your creations?
-My work creations will depend on what the client want, I am lucky to be able to use my own style in my client's work, mainly because my clients are usually people who appreciates what I do and wants me to do my own thing. I am quite happy and blessed by that. :)

-How do you work?
-I mostly work with a graphic tablet + Photoshop, I will then continue drawing non stop because I know once I stop I will lose my groove. At times I would line work it traditionally first on paper then scan it, but for coloring I HAVE to use Photoshop. I am so bad with traditional coloring... I need dat control Z.

-Why did you choose this FML story?
-This FML story has caught my attention because it is both so cute yet trollish. It is unexpected and the story is not as 'intimate' as the others, don't get me wrong I do love the more adult jokes ones but I chose one that I don't need to draw any sex scenes lol. I don't think I have drawn a sex scene before in my whole life and I'm sure if I do it would just look like two person wrestling... Anyway I chose a clean story for that reason. I also added a lot of 'Ry stuff' in there. The baby is kind of like a human version of a Green Bear character that I always like to draw (In fact Green Bear can be seen resting next to the baby in the first scene), and the mother is kind of like a female version of myself. I don't know I just felt like making this kinda Ry-Spirit style while keeping the story faithful to the original. And I hope fans can enjoy the little nods to my stuff in this FML comic.

  • Good news(ish?): Your illustrated FML made it to 9gag - guess that makes the both of you guys just that much more famous
Bad news: They missed the whole point- incest/hentai jokes + some don't know what FML is.

In any event, very nice illustration, Ry
