It's not about what you spend. It should be about the sentimental value rather than the monetary value. Just because you spent more doesn't mean you put as much thought into the gift.

Well I wouldn't care for a watch either, we've got phones for the time making a watch pretty useless. A mug is vastly more useful and visually appealing
