Who said it was stray? Any animal can get ringworm, stray or not. It's just a fungal infection.

stores and adoption agencies usually have their cats regularly checked at the vet.

it's better to have stray animals. just take them directly to the vet. by having a stray animal you are giving shelter to a homeless animal, that otherwise would have died in the streets, and saving some money. I find very dumb, how people spend money buying an animal, given that there are thousands of animals( lot of them pure breed that people don't want anymore) living in the streets of every city

I did not buy my animals I got them from a friend because they were going to go to the shelter otherwise. My cats are basically rescue cats. If I ever get another cat it'll be from a shelter. I totally agree it's better to get a rescue animal! I'd rather have a 10year old rescue cat than a kitten I had to pay for..
