I'd casually drop something like "no biggie man, I know you'll pay me back, you make good money with that child pornography thing" the next time his parents are visiting. I may be an ass though. But so is he anyway.

Many places require payment on the 1st, or the next business day. Since the 1st fell on a business day, rent was due. If it's not paid, a late fee is charged. So even if it was a prank on the roommate's part (highly unlikely), they would then have a mark on their record, and a late fee to pay. This would make it a very stupid prank. OP's roommate is just a dick.
