Disc herniation can result in a broken/chipped spinal level, which can severely damage or impinge upon the spinal cord. Unfortunately the #1 sign of spinal cord damage is involuntary excretion and urination. Either way that suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks!

Seeing how he couldn't move, I'm assuming he was paralyzed. I don't think he'd have been able to press the button even WITH Life Alert :(
