Today, I moved into a lovely basement suite. Unfortunately, the 12 year old upstairs plays violin. She also plays baritone. She said she alternates each day. FML

Well, what's wrong with that? I alternate between my cello and violin when I practice. Unless she's really bad, then FYL, OP.

Or you could try stapling ( possibly with a nail gun) sound proofing foam to the ceiling? Much more expensive than earplugs, and trickier, but might work better.

She can't practice all day though, can she? She'd have to go to school, do homework, play with friends, eat etc. Leaves you an hour-ish of misery a day? It might feel like an eternity at the time, but there will be an end.
