Today, I'm finding myself thinking of the sweetest, most amazing guy I have ever met who says he's willing to help raise my child if he turns out to be the father. He is currently in prison. FML

Judge whether you would trust him to be around your kid based off his crime and the cause of it, as well as how he feels about it. Obviously, if it's something like rape, murder, child pornography or anything similar, don't let him near your kid regardless of whether he is the father or how guilty he feels. If it's a relatively minor charge, he's genuinely remorseful, and gets help to keep from doing a repeat, and the child is his, it's your call.
