It depends on her family's culture. In some parts of South America this is a perfectly normal thing to do. It's the "correct" way to mash the potatoes. And about the only thing I learned in Spanish 3 in high school...
What culture/country is this? None of my Spanish friends or family have ever mentioned this important little tidbit!
